Has my transmission grenaded?

Great idea. Here you go. This is in Park at idle.
I just tried again and upon start up it was making the noise in video. It then went away...I engaged the center diff, shifted to R and started to go slowly and then 'clunk', grinding noise again.

Can you identify where it's coming from? IE engine compartment, center of vehicle and so-on? Since the noise is happening in park it could possibly be a broken flexplate.

Does the starter appear to operate normally?

Definitely coming from the center of the vehicle. In this video, you'll hear it get louder as i get under the transmission pan. Starter is operating normal.

apologies in advance for the lousy filming....
Internal transmission most likely. Could be torque converter, front pump, input shaft or some other major component.

forgive my ignorance, sounds like it needs to be removed to be properly diagnosed? I'm going to be at the mercy of wherever I decide to tow it for diagnosis/repair.....so it sounds like I need to find a place I trust and then just go with it. I'm in San Diego county...if anyone has any recommendations I'm all ears. I know SD Trux and The Truck Shop are reputable for Land Cruisers.

May be a broken flexplate. try opening the window and inspect the flex plate.

If your trans is out, get it fully rebuilt from a reputable ship: I heard Yota-1 in Nor Cal is reputed for toy stuff. give a call and check with them. I haven't used their service.

When you plan to install the new/rebuilt trans, make sure to clean all the lines and install an inline filter AFTER the external cooler BEFORE the intial start. I didn't do that and some of the small particles that didn't get removed while flushing the lines ended up in the pan, so I had to pull the pan out and clean it to make the system free of foreign matter.

Thanks for that info. Can someone provide a link or something on how to do the flex plate inspection? Or I assume I can find something on YouTube. I have no intention of doing the R&R myself. I'm just trying to get as much info from you all on this forum so I'm armed with as much info as possible prior to going somewhere. If indeed the tranny is hosed, Toyota tells me the Toyota remanufactured units have been discontinued so I'm left with aftermarket or rebuild existing.

I think toyota get those trans rebuilt through a third party. There are no aftermarket options except a full rebuild

Just letting you know how I went with my trans rebuild. I planned to keep the cruiser for life.. so I got it fully rebuilt. The shop gave me two options (1) full rebuilt (quoted 1800 to 3000) including the installation (2) install a used which they didn't recommend. I chose the 1st option, but after the complete disassembly of trans, they said all planetary gears have been chewed up! only input and putput shaft and the casing of my existing transmission was salvageable. They bought a used trans and swapped those along with brand new components. final price went to $3881 with an OEM rear main seal. Oh, they gave me a free tow to their shop from where I got stranded (about 20 minute drive)

After the repair, I felt the true pulling power of a V8. It now getup and go as opposed to slow heavy AWD. I have driven many 200's and I feel my 100 has a better pulling power after this trans rebuild. Those who own 200's will say it is not possible due to 5.7 Vs 4.7 and horsepower difference, but what I am telling is what I feel. I do not know they installed a high torque torque-converter: The next thing is the MPG, it looks like it went down about 1 to 1.5 MPG (now at 15.5 to 16.4 MPG: earlier I got 16-17.5 MPG) at same driving conditions: Lastly, the peace of mind of driving a 2000 LC that is known to grenade/self destruct the transmission. I later treated the drive line by installing OEM brand new front and rear drive shafts! This forum is very helpful in saving money as well as spending money!

thank you, that's good info. One reputable trans shop in the area has already said they wouldn't do the rebuild. Another just quoted me $4500 and they said that's a full rebuild, all new parts....not just replacing what's broke. 3yr/50,000 mile warranty. My plan has always been to keep it forever...other than this, it really is in near mint condition.

I sent the video to the shop that offered the rebuild and they did say they've seen a coupler between the input shaft and the transfer case strip out and cause a very similar sound/symptom. 🤷‍♂️

If it still starts- chances are the flex plate isn’t the problem.

Seems there are transmission rebuilders out there that offer up to 5 years warranty whose prices start far lower, like $2250. Not sure the experience others have had but $4500 seems steep given that’s like ~40-50% the value of the whole truck.

Toyota automatic transmissions are expensive to work on and they are often rebuilt improperly. Vett your shop carefully. Price-shopping may not be the best course of action.

Yeah, I would assume that's why the one shop said they didn't even want to touch it. Any and all information with respect to personal experience having an A343F or similar transmission rebuilt is welcomed!! I'd love a 5yr warranty!
