Has anyone restored a 62 steering wheel?

The post is it, what have you done?
The wheel I have is actually from a 70 series but the rubber ring is the same. It has the standard loose grip on top and the grain is worn off too.
My thought is to drill a few holes on the back and inject some sort of glue to get it stuck to the inner metal ring. Perhaps 3m "super fast urethane " would work (?)

Next would be to paint it with some fresh textured grey but that one makes me nervous, and I don't really know what product would work.

Does anyone have some experience to share?

Thanks ahead of time and I will share what I figure out too.

Cheers!

Here's what I have. Cant really see but it needs some help.

@Seth S , did you paint your steering wheel?

I have been looking at these guys' products for dash pad refinishing. Maybe it would work on the wheel too?

different Seth maybe? I’ve not repainted anything on my truck yet 😂
Haha! I thought I saw your handle come up on search.

Thanks anyway

I likely wrote something about replacing my steering wheel with a different one at some point. Maybe that’s what popped up.

I sent mine off to Texas but I had them put extra padding on it and leather wrap it. That did a great job,

cost after shipping was shy of $500 pricey but Im happy.

That looks nice. Lots of 80 series folks using that same outfit. I hadn't thought about wrapping the 60 wheel but the 80 wheel is rubber underneath too. Thanks for the idea.

I found a mint condition steering wheel from ebay for $150 and painted it.

That's a beauty. The color match looks good in the picture. Is that color "16303"? I cant quite tell in the picture.

Looks like the OEM has a little brown. Maybe Monterey 15723? Difficult to tell.

Interesting. I might get both and see where they end up. It would be good to have the info for anyone else looking for paint for the soft parts.

For the metal dash parts, I am actually waiting for powder coat samples to try to match the 6x grey and tan dash metal parts with Jason @TRAIL TAILOR for his new dash bezels.

I just ordered the 2 colors of SEM paint. I won't have them til next week but I will try to see this through.

I ordered this as well.

The big question will be how long this holds up with hands wearing it down. At least there is enough product to respray it several times. I wouldn't want to have to do it very often though.

Ive seen restored steering wheels for sale (not land cruiser) that have been re-cast. But these are re-cast in hard plastic... I’m not sure if there are places that re-cast foam steering wheels. I know Koch’s in California does a lot of older Porsche wheels.

It would be an interesting experiment to see if you could make a mold from an existing wheel and use it to re-foam a bare steering wheel frame.

The leather wrapped option sure looks a lot easier.

I’ve not looked into getting mine redone, but it needs it after 30 years of New Mexico UV damage. It’s cracked to hell.

I have been looking at swapping it out with a Nardi wheel: ND Classic - 5061.38.3000

It’s a similar classic style. Alternatively, used wheels pop up often on parts sites.

My 62 steering wheel was cracked a separating badly from the internal frame at the top. I wrapped it in wheelskinz, completely saved it from falling apart and made it really solid again. I'll be ordering another wheelskin for it soon because I want a better color match.
The trick is to pull the stitch string super tight from the start, mine got tighter the further I went around the wheel, only I notice it
but....I notice it.
