I am doing a frame off restomod on my 77 FJ40. I wanted to use some alloy wheels and anytime I can use Toyota parts, I am a happy camper. I picked up a set of 4 take off wheels that came off of an 07 FJ Cruiser with the hopes that they would fit my 40 and if not I would just sell them later. They were only $150 so I pulled the trigger. Last week, I lifted up one corner and did a trial fit. To my surprise, the wheel slid right into place . I installed the factory FJC lug nuts and turned the rim to make sure it was true. The size of the 17" wheel allows plenty of room to clear the caliper and plenty of room for the outer tie rod end too. I will just run the front wheels w/o the center caps and use the caps on the rears since they don't have a hub sticking through on that end. If you get some of these wheels, make sure you get or aquire the factory lug nuts as thay are not a tapered seat nut like on the typical FJ40 wheel, they are a collared type like used on newer Toyota's. I will probably leave them silver but I was thinking about having them powder coated white to match my top and front grill when the rig is done.

you will need a 2" wheel spacers, they have the incorrect B/s, search FJC steelies you will see several threads on this.

If they clear my brakes and steering, why do I need to use spacers? I know they will change the track width a little but I dont see why I would need spacers if they are not rubbing on anything. Like a lot in life, there are things that I overlook, so thanks for the heads up.

dont understand why you would do a frame up resto and then use those wheels........ but what ever... they will work.. do a search, lots of pics out there...

It's a restomod, not a faithfull restoration. I am updating a bunch of things like changing to SBC, adding A/C, switching to rear disk brakes and a few others like that. Thanks for the info.

By moving tire and wheel inboard, you will probably rub when turning tight. That is the reason for the spacers.

OK, now I get it! The tires may rub on the springs before the stops hit. After I get my tires, I will check and use spacers if needed. I think thay are going to give the 40 a nice updated look and if I decide I dont like them, I will just change to a set of the black steel wheels.

I have a set FJc Steelies with 34x10.50 LTB Tires with1.5'' spacers, otherwise it will hit the springs and the rear tub area, its does clear the calipers nice, but you need spacers..:meh:

Thanks for clearing that up! I am going to be running 285/70/17's which aren't as big so maybe I could get away with a 1" spacer? Can you tell me where you bought yours please? I need to order some up. Thanks

The spacers came with the 40 but anyone here can point where to get it,you can use any kind of tire cos the spacers are for clear the rims toward the springs, not the height of the tire of your choice.

Eshu, you have another set of 16" steel wheels from a Tundra or 4Runner, correct?

What paint did you use on these wheels? A $$$ paint shop paint or inexpensive rattle can?

Dkroth...my current tires are 9.00x16 MIlitary on 4runner spare tires rims 16x7......the 17 fjc rims i use this cheap paint from Home Depot.. like $ 2.80 can..( i just paint the outside of the rim..inside still black, like the old school cars)..now im thinking if i will paint the 16 rims grey color like the 17..not sure...yet..

Eshu, thank you. It's coming back to me now. I remember you posting those pics in another thread. In fact, I think I was the one that asked you to measure your wheel offset.

The paint looks great for just a few $$.

I threw Cruiser alloys with 31s on a 1982 40 and rubbed hard on the drag link on hard left turns.

those have a nice look to 'em, kinda rugged, I've never cared for the look of alloy rims, they just seem too... city. Those, on the other hand, painted a simple color look like they belong.
