Hi All

Having issues starting my 97 LX 163K. I have had it for about a year. It always took about 5 seconds to turnover, not what I am used to with Toyota's. I replaced the fuel filter, cleaned out the throttle body and replaced the plugs. No real change to that issue, I figured I could just live with it... Now, after sitting for a while (1-2 days) it takes 10-15 seconds to crank, sometimes more than once. It turns over if I press the accelerator but does not hold the idle. Today, I did this 3 - 5 times with no luck and decided to drive my other car, I came back a couple of hours later and tried it again, it took 2 times of cranking for aproximately 10-15 seconds and it turned over and idled fine...

Any thoughts, I'm thinking fuel pump (ouch) or sock is clogged? Anyone else have this issue before I go pulling my seats out?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks Everyone!
Ben

Do a search on FPR ... Stands for fuel preasure regulator. A lot of good info on hard starting (even if that is not your problem). I am in a simular situation.

After reading through these threads the FPR is high on my list of suspects. Got one on the way, if it fixes my problem I'll post symptoms and fix.

Do you have the same problem of hard starting after it's been running a while? If it only a cold start problem, check into the cold start injector. Since these rarely seem to go out, the first thing I'd do is make sure the electrical connection is plugged in.

Really only happens when it's cold, specifically when it has sat for at least a couple of days without being driven. I will see what happens after the weekend. I did get a little of a rough idle today, I'm thinking MAF or fuel pump strainer. I will clean the MAF and replace the strainer - both cheap and would not hurt doing and will post if I find anything.

Thanks for the replies...

I haven't taken the 1FZ apart to look at components yet. But do these trucks have cold start injectors at the throttle body? If they do, then that would be a good place to start looking.

Fixed....

Cleaned the MAF and intake. Starts right up - no more problems!

Thanks for the help!
Ben
