Hi all- I recently traded in my GX460 for a 2016 land cruiser. Love it. Question to people more familiar with this truck: is a hard shift from 1st to 2nd normal? Should I be concerned about fluid or an issue lurking here? I notice it the most when I gin it or and going up steep slopes. Any insight would be appreciated.

Search for TSB Transmission quite a few threads. Toyota has TSB that is software update for 2016 8 speed trannies. I had mine done about 3 months ago made big difference in 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st shifting behavior when transmission was cold.

Thank you, much appreciated!

My dealer charged me $118 for the TSB software update and it fixed the hard shift. Some dealers have charged customers and some haven't, depending on whether they are willing to go to bat for you with Toyota.

My new to me '16 has the 1-2 hard shift.

When I called to book an appointment to have them apply the TSB fix they told me the "can't just apply a TSB" and that they have to charge me an hour for diagnostics and if it requires a TSB then they can apply it.

I this BS?

Can I not just ask them to apply the TSB and pay the 0.7 labor charge, per the TSB document? It is my damned rig.

What experience have you had?

Find a different dealer.

Their claim of "diagnostics" sounds like BS to me. The "diagnostics" consists of reading the TSB document, which simply asks if there is "a harsh shift on acceleration" or "shift shock 1st to 2nd gear". I would point this out to them. If they stand their ground, then find a different dealer. Maybe just find a different dealer anyway.

TSB document:

Thank you both. I had the TSB printed out read the TSB number to them, and planned show it to them when I go for the appointment. The next nearest dealer is over an hour away, but I'll give them a call. I'm happy to pay for the cost of the TSB, but I don't want to pay any other BS charges for "diagnostics".

I had work done and had to pay diag fee and labor for tsb install. Got a story about how TSB are for Tech only and provide how to trouble shoot procedures for techs. They are not intended for general public. As this is second Toyota dealer I have had to deal with first was even worse. I just paid and called it a day. I try not to go to dealer unless I have to. I had break work done as part of this visit and they diag fee covered that as well. So I guess I really only payed for tsb.

I'll report back how it goes. Appointment first thing tomorrow morning.

Had it done today, they "determined that I needed the TSB repair" so didn't charge me for the diagnostics. I am out of warranty so they charged me a reasonable $88 to apply the TSB.

Side note: they texted me to tell me that their complimentary check found that I needed an engine and cabin air filter. I texted back saying that I had locked my glovebox and had the physical key in my possession, so found it hard to believe that they checked it, and that I needed a cabin air filter (and besides, I also replaced it myself three weeks ago). She checked with the tech and he admitted that he hadn't checked it, but "they usually do at this mileage". The service writer apologized and gave me a small discount on the service charges.

What a ****ing joke.

Can't trust any of these dealers, same games no matter where you go it appears, sad.
