Hand Crank Starting

For those who are interested in such minutia, there are (were?) two such cranks, the difference of which is 6 inches. The shorter one is the actual engine crank, and the longer one the spare tire lowering crank for the FJ55, which doubles as an engine crank. And warmed up or no, there's no way I've been able to get my LC to start with them. Maybe because of the compression of 168 in the cylinders?

Hey I'd like a copy too

Where to put it

Can someone show a pic of where the crank goes?

I really wanted to give this a better answer :D , but, it goes into the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) eye.

I learned to handcrank on an early English car, a '52 MG. First thing to know:
DO NOT wrap your thumb around the handle! Keep your thumb next to your fingers! That way if the handle does kick back, it only breaks your grip, not your humerus. Keep your legs out of the way of the handle too.
I forget who was filming at Pigrun #3, I've never actually seen the video, but I remember someone pointing a camera while I cranked.
In the 18 years that I've had this Pig I've handcranked it to start when it was cold, had a weak battery (not enough juice to crank but enough to make a spark) or both. When you can't get a jump, a tug or a push and the crank is the only option, you make it work. I've had better luck getting it to start on the upstroke of the crankhandle than with the downward.

YIKES!
You never hand crank by pushing down!
A kickback will break your arm!
Pull up with your fingers only and with your thumb outside like someone said previously.

The handle SHOULD disengage upon start up anyway...wanna bet its fool proof?
NOT ME pal...! LoL

My buddy HAS started his a couple of times with the crank but I never did try mine. Small block now anyway so I guess I missed my chance for a "Cruiser Bulge"...AKA hernia.

Hmmmmm.....MAYBE a rope twice around the extra bottom pulley like an old outboard would do the trick!?!?

You KNOW I was kidding...right!?!?
Man...can you imagine the looks you'd get if you tried that? Hahahaha

I've heard you can start up a standard rig by jacking up a wheel and spinning it though! I dunno....sounds hokey to me...but when your desperate you'll give anything a try.

LOVE to watch someone give it a shot!
