Hello friends. Requesting some help disassembling a bus for scrap.

Short Story:
I bought this bus this week for the engine. Engine would have cost $4300, and the whole running/driving bus cost just $4500, so I went for the bus. The engine will eventually put in my F550.

The Plan:
The body of the bus needs to be cut up and loaded into Pablo for hauling off to the scrap yard. Literally the whole body, all the way down so that the only thing left is the rolling chassis. All the demo tools. I expect it'll be a few different loads of scrap, so if we can load pablo once then stack the subsequent loads that I can move myself at a later date, that would be killer.

Gantry crane is now at Ryan's.

The Date+location:
November 22nd, starting maybe 10am
Ryan's house, where the bus currently lives
@UZJ105 :
"For any locals or out-of-towners that plan to attend, you are welcome to camp on my property or bring a sleeping pad and sleep in the house. "

Post up if you can make it on November 22nd!

I'm uninitiated here and will still be out of town on the 22nd, but gotta ask, what kind of engine could a bus with split rims have that would be an upgrade for the F550? I take it you're using it as a base build it?

International navistar dt360. Not a base, just an engine swap from the bus to my f550

In viewing the pictures Johnny posted, you may think to yourself, "Ryan has some cool project vehicles". No, all 3 belong to Johnny.

It's crazy how far $5700 (not including the trailer) can go sometimes, lol.

Bu(tt)s stuff!!

Sounds like fun, count me in!

It has to be dismantled to bring to scrap. I expect to earn back 1-2 grand in scrap, maybe more, so it's worth the effort. Makes the engine cheaper.

How exactly would you suggest towing an air brake truck with no engine (no air for brakes) through a city to the scrap yard? Can't flat tow it, and I am not about to hire a semi with a flat bed to tow it to the scrap yard. It's not a car, it probably weighs 25,000lbs, lol

Also, it'll be fun, and an excuse to get the boys together for some shenanigans.

I bet it doesn’t weigh 10k after you pull the motor. Cage the brakes and make a tow bar out of some scrap laying around, or maybe a chunk of the frame. I used to see the trains of cars headed to Mexico going down the interstate all the time. Those dudes would pull 3 of those buses all tow barred together with a 1997 Dodge Neon. You can do it with your 550.

The motor only weighs about 1250#

Edit: I'll think about it more, but right now disassembling it seems like the best option.

Here’s what I was thinking: GVWR is probably around 26k. It would have been designed to handle 40 ish passengers and still be legal. Thats about 8k of freight. The seats are gone so there’s another 3k. The motor and trans probably weigh 2k plus another 1k of fuel and fluids. So 14k is gone from the max weight. I guess my math was a little off, but not too far. Maybe it weighs 12.

You could always get a medium duty wrecker to take it away. There’s a scrap yard that’s not too far from there.

It’ll be in November so it could be a cold night. Cut a hole in the roof and have the campfire inside the bus so Ryan can’t complain about you killing his trees with fire.
