So you are saying if I get my license I will know how to use a radio?
Seriously?

That explains why everybody is able to get a license in HAM radio. That bar is set pretty low I guess.

I said the process of getting the license requires some study of radio theory in order to provide accurate answers on the test. As for if you will know how to use it or not I have no idea. You could be a complete idiot for all I know !

Correct.

Think about guns. There is no license required to be able to use guns.
What's more dangerous? A gun or a HAM radio?

Not sure what point you are trying to make here. Knives are more dangerous than radios too.

I would rather be hit by a radio than a bullet or a knife. That's my point.
Who is throwing radios and what does that have to do with anything?

Side note: depending on velocity some of the older base stations could be quite destructive on impact.

Here are all the questions and correct answers that could be on the test. I also have links to videos to help explain the the questions.

The questions are all multiple choice and you only need 26 correct out of 35 on the test.

You could drive a car without a licence but you would not think of not getting your drivers licence because you need to take a test.

I hope this helps

You all need to chill the hell out and come down the snob HAM radio towers you all live in.

What's the harm in using (without a license) a 2m frequency, let's say 146.xx, while on the trail spotting someone?

Oh wait, I need to broadcast my call sign before I tell you to turn driver a little more to avoid that big rock there.
You don't do that? Well... you have a license and don't broadcast your call sign while helping others on the trail? Hmmm, shame on you. Report yourselves to the FCC then.

If the test is so damn easy, everyone can pass, then why the hell is there a test to begin with?

Why the hell do I need to know all this bull**** while offroading? What will I ever need this crap for?
Bunch of snobs and geeks.

"should we turn left or right?"
"Oh, let's see if Ohm's law can help us decide which approach is better..."

Ughhh

So let me check. Your argument is that because you don't think you need to know this you can just ignore it. OK. If that is how you feel I hope you give others the same freedom. I guess if you see someone destroying a trail because they don't see how it matters to them you are good with that. Or is someone is spills diff oil all over the trail and just leaves it there and drives off that's cool with you. How about if a group just stops on the trail for lunch and blocks your way. That good because learning trail rules doesn't matter to them.

If you can say yes to that then you have a point. I don't agree but ok. If not maybe you are the self righteous selfish snob who is to scared to take the test and do thing right and that he attacks all who do.

Dragos, what's wrong with you just following the rules?

Sometimes you have good posts...and sometimes not so good. Trying to defend not getting this license is in my mind your all time worst. Holly cow...grow up.

I am going to post one more time on this thread since I was the OP. For the record I have acquired a handheld ham and am not licensed nor do I see a reason to get licensed. My uses for the ham will be seldom only on trail runs with other drivers in my group. I probably will use it only a few times a year at most. There are tons of other guys that do the same in my clubs and on the trail every day, everywhere.

For those guys that are die hard hams to say that you must follow the law no matter what is ridiculous. If you are telling me you always follow every law you are lying. Have you ever jaywalked? Ran a stop sign? Got caught speeding? In my book this is the same. I am sorry you are so offended by my use of my little handheld ham a couple times a year but IMO you are acting insane. For the record I see no problem with Dagos and his comments. He should be allowed to speak his mind as much and as loud as any of you and he should not be bullied into not speaking his mind on the matter. @Dragos80

Furthermore banning someone because they have an opinion on a matter is just as childish as your feeling about how they are acting. Let's all grow up a bit and respect other's opinions, no matter what they be. I will choose to use my equipment as I see fit and accept the consequences. Same as running drunk across the street at 12am to get to taco bell. I do love a drunk nachos supreme.

Guess we all get to choose what and who we respect.

I was out of cell service and needed to get a call out to my wife and remembered I have a HAM with the repeater programed in by a friend. After several attempts with my cheat sheet trying to get it to work someone out of nowhere identified himself and said It start with my call sign. It did say that on my cheat sheet but WTF difference will that make. I look at my mike for my call sign rolled my eyes and tried it again. Immediately I had several people offer to help me, it was determined the phone patch was down and someone made the call for me. After my thanks everyone ID themselves and back to monitoring.

In case of emergency you do not need to be licences to use a ham radio. Glad it worked out I hope people would have answered you even without a call sign.

Who had an emergency did I miss something?

I think I taught my children the wrong lesson when they were young. Undoubtably I should have taught them that everything in life that requires a little bit of effort or time should simply be ignored. After all whose going to know.

Sorry to short of an answer. If you would have just said I have a friends vehicle and need to get a message to my wife and there is no cell service someone should have helped you. It does not have to be life of death for you to use the radio without a licence. For instance if you are broke down on the trail use the radio. Not that big of a deal.

This is kind of my point though. The rules are not crazy. If you want to use the radio just take the time and learn the rules and take the test.

So, going with your comparison here: what you're saying is that you deliberately run red lights? Good going, kid.

I find the licensing rules as annoying as the next guy. I think they could perhaps be adjusted to better match up to communication realities.

But what I find quite interesting is what arguments folks on here construct for themselves as to why they ought to be able to skirt the current rules. And with that, it's time to mod the ignore list. Cheers.

What's interesting is that the test rules were simplified years ago when they dropped Morse code! Lower primates can pass the tech exam now. Some here can't or won't.

if you have the ham gear get the license. Advocating for something less is just stupid!
