Gotta say, glad we got this done when we did

I have a few handhelds sitting in chargers in my work room and garage, I leave them tuned to a local repeater which has a Weather and Info Net every morning at 8:30.
Traffic is certainly picking up as this pandemic accelerates, more and more check ins....

I listen on the 70cm: 442.250

@apinti, can my baofeng do this?

Yep we were lucky to get that public meeting in before Armageddon set in. I have enjoyed my HAM experience so far and even with my limited equipment I was able to get 104 contacts during the Va QSO party last weekend.

Way to go....

I received my Handheld today... and I could use a mentor to help me learn more about operating as a HAM. My first task... honestly... is to connect to a Tysons Corner repeater and make first contact. Any volunteers?

With the following line:
"The 91 Machine's transceiver transmits on a frequency of 146.910 MHz using frequency modulation with a bandwidth of 16KHz (wideband). It receives with a standard -600 KHz repeater offset. This means that the receiver frequency is 146.310 MHz. "

@emorth Does this mean I set MY transmit frequency to "146.910... offset -.6," or do I set my transmit to "146.310... offset +.6?"

Receive freq is 146.91
transmit freq is 146.31 (.6 negative offset)
no CTCSS (PL) is necessary.
if you do a momentary (1 second) transmission, if you are in range of the repeater, you will here the repeater transmit for a few seconds.

Repeaters in the 147 MHz have a .6 positive offset

So... I believe I heard Morse code from the repeater. It transmits in Morse its callsign. I am going to call that a win. And thank you!

The repeater will not identify if there is no traffic. When there is traffic it will identify every 10 minutes. Since it id’d when you keyed it up that means there has been no traffic for the last 10 minutes.
google DC area ham repeaters. There are lots of them in the area.

Still no first contact... but managed to successfully connect to a Tysons Corner repeater and a Vienna repeater on two separate bands each. Apparently, no one wants to respond to my dulcet tones and the sultry sound of my callsign.

Also... thinking about joining Vienna Wireless Society... anyone work with them before? Any other Ham clubs they like?

Are you available right now? I can try to hit the Tysons repeater from my HT.

We should put up a CLCC repeater. How tall and how much wattage would we need to cover most of the club listening area? Also, how much would that cost? Obviously location would be a factor too.

Well, is not that simple. You ill need to have the capability to stick an antenna up high somewhere, remember when it comes to antenna height is might..then, you need the equipment, and then, you need someone ( paging doctor Ed :)) to take care of things. In all honesty, i don't thing is necessary. We have plenty of repeaters around and most of us with the proper equipment should be able to reach them. That is just my opinion, of course.
