My folks are coming into town this weekend and there's a good chance I'll be able to take my dad out for a half day of four wheeling. As I'm relatively new to the area, I need some suggestions for trails to take him on. I've been considering taking towards FR479 up to Sheep Bridge, but am not sure where to cross the Verde river below the dam spillway. Can any body offer any advice - where to cross, or other places to head out for a mild to moderate half day trip?

I would take them up and around Montana Mountain. You will start off in the desert and you are in the pines after Rogers trough. This is the trip I do when I have out of town guest and they love it.

Just before Christmas I was headed to Sheeps Bridge and the water was deeper then normal, close to 3'.

VERY SCENIC RUN. Yes, great idea! Though there's no 4-wheeling. It's all been dozed:

Four Peaks Road offers scenic views (a bit longer than a half-day, though), as does the road up Humbolt Mountain from FR24.

FR41 would be nice if you want to stop for BBQ in any of the Cave Creek western places (always a hit with visitors - Satisfied Frog and Brewery).

Sheep Bridge was more than a half-day for me whenever I took it, in fact, it was always a LONG day.

The road to Bartlett Lake (paved, no wheeling) is real scenic and my visitors always liked it, same for Horseshoe Lake (dirt road).

The Montana Mountain trail is looking pretty good. Thanks for the suggestions, and keep any new ones coming.

Well, I decided to take the south route in and out of the Sunflower Mine because I was looking for a bit of a challenge. The challenges were the perfect level, and my dad, my dog, and I had a great time both on the trail and at the mine works.

Thanks for the suggestions!

IMO, Broken Arrow's the best scenic, half day trip for touristas. There's a reason the PJs have been succesful soo long. And now that the law's changed up there (Only PJ tours can use the trail for commerce), the traffic's way down. I ran it yesterday (Sat mid morning) and only came across any once, while at Chicken point.
