Dear Casner gang,
It was truly my pleasure to run Mt. Casner with you all this season. For too many years my build was just not at a good spot to attempt the journey. But this go around was different.
Only a simple to fix yet troublesome air intake tube (junk-yard find from a 2014 Chevy panel van air intake) that seperated twice on the forst few miles of durt road, caused me to rethink all of my life's choices. But once it was fixed all of my fears then turned to the 5.3L engine build and Orion t-case that I rebuilt from YouTube videos and other unmentionable sources. Surely I would have other trail-story worth "shake-down" memories to also add to my questionable life choices...
But thankfully that was not the case.
The trek into the Mt. Casner foothills was behind us and the white-knuckle Casner switch-backs were staring us down. Previous to the trip I was tinkering with a "performance mode" trigger on the 5.3L LS that would allow the PCM and TCM to go into some fancy to me off-road modes (i.e. enhanced torque control, non-lockup, 4Low, 2nd gear only stuff) and of course Mt. Casner was my testing ground. Trying to test out the performance mode on the street is a little silly and probably a false positive so I thought "why not test it out on Casner..."
Anyway, switched the tranny into manual 2nd, switch the t-case to 4Low and flipped the switch for performance mode and she crawled right up the switch backs like it was supposed to be there all along. Like a proud papa!
Anyway, enough of my story and struggles of getting here... big shout-out to Bryce for securing the permit and to all of the other members who attended.
It is really good to know what there are others out there who are also a little crazy and adventurous like me.
