Came back from a trip and the Remote FOB battery had died. The key FOB I used would not unlock any of the door locks but would still turn the ignition ( I did get in).

The other Key FOB and Valet key would work all the door locks and the ignition

I took it to a locksmith who said the key had been worn down and could not be cut to fix the problem

We ordered a blank and I asked him about having to program it for the Imobilizer. He told me that the programmable part is in the electronics in the top part of the key and he would just move that to the new key blank and it would work without programming

He was right! I had thought there was a chip inside the metal part of the key.

Thought this was useful info worth sharing

Yes. Same goes for the case. Case gets cracked, buy a new one and swap it out.

Programming a whole new key takes a visit to the dealer.

Depends on the year of the truck. Many years you can program the transponder and remote on your own, but there were a few years in there that it took Techstream to program.

A 2004 can only be done at the dealer, so I was grateful I didn't have to worry about programming

Yep and it sure is great that you can get the blanks and shells so cheaply on e-bay and we don't have to buy a factory fob/key, they're fairly expensive.

I shook my head why I found a muddy, salted, dead fob/key tied up behind the bumper cover they day I brought mine home but at least the electronics were recoverable.

I think it can only be done on the land cruiser and not on the LX. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I did this recently add well. Ordered some Denso blanks on ebay, had them cut at the hardware store from my original and moved the guts. Worked fine.

Should put the key in a small, sturdy zip-lock bag or similar sealed bag, with a magnet. Mine would be hard to find if you didn't know where to look. A few times a year my wife ends up using it.

I ordered a dozen key blanks online and had them cut to the VIN by the dealer. I think I've gone through half of them, cracked at the base where the metal key comes out of the plastic case. I just pull out the guts, drop in a new battery (1616), put the guts in the new shell and off we go. This is for a 2003.

Nice to know - thanks for sharing.

This is one thing I need to do. It's been a number of years since mine last broke and I didn't have this information prior to joining 'Mud.

For a remote master key, all of the electronics live in the fob, LC v LX doesn't matter. For a valet key, the RFID (or whatever the vehicle recognizes) is in the top of the key.

Broken key cover where to order just shell? 99 cruiser

Damn I knew this was gonna happen....
For 1999 landcruiser 100 series.
Finally broke the plastic case that holds the chip fob and the key together.
I don't want to purchase a whole new key cause dealership wants 327 bucks and the physical key still works and the chip still works.
The parts rep tried to tell me that I have to purchase a whole new key but I think he's trying to pull a fast one on me.

There is a little screw that fastens the key to the cover so I am pretty sure I should be able to replace just the cover.

Anyone know where I can order just the plastic case cover from???

Here's the other side of the cover showing the dense part number???

Any help is appreciated

Thanks!

You can buy a key blank and put your electronics module inside. I went to my local locksmith as he cut it for the $50 as well

On a 2003 can a brand new key with new chip be programmed at home?
