You running open diffs or do you have lockers? I've been using Royal Purple (I think it's 75/140. I'll have to double check on the bottle) in my open diffs and it's worked really well and kept them quiet. Only problem is it's pricey.

I have the shock proof in my open diffs now on my 60, but i ran it in my 40 which had an arb in the front and a detroit in the rear, as well as my firstgen 4runner which had a fj80 e locker in the front and fj cruiser elocker in the rear. Same experience with all of them. Quiet operation and no probs whatsoever.
Oldish thread, but been reading a lot about oils, esp gear oil since I'm about fill up the gear boxes. Interesting that everyone hates on GL5, and I get why, even though the FSM states GL 4 and 5 are good to use.
Man, gear oil options are a pain to find near me...Wallymart carries NO gear oil, and two parts chains have sh!t selections. Hoping the Napa has the StaLube GL4, otherwise I'm calling Bezos. Pretty sure I'll use the Stalube for the first couple fill and drains, then may consider the MT90 after that.
The Mobil 50 is interesting but I'd feel better if actually had "90" on its label, not 50 ...yes, I read the spec sheet.
For my new h55, I ran Lucas for the first 1k miles, then switched to Redline. The Redline gave me better shifting between 2-3 and 3-4 but on upshifts and downshifts. The improvements are similar across ambient temps from 45-90F.

Found 2 gallons of the Sta Lube 90W Gl4, I'm embarrassed to say what I paid for it, so I just won't.
Other than, WTF?!?! It must have 24K gold flake in it.

This was me exactly... about 18 months ago. Break in w Sta-Lub then switched to MT90, slight difference in the new H55. Shifts great now, except for getting it into reverse, seems way to early to be fighting that as often as I do. Have resorted to using first to "rock" the truck a little before shifting into R.
Reverse gear doesn't have any sort of speed matching synchronizer rings like all the other gears do. Its just caveman style gear into gear meshing which will grind for the life of the transmission - until you change your reverse gear shifting habits.
The reverse gear grinds when shifting because the gearbox is still spinning down all the gears when you first push in the clutch. You've got to wait several seconds after pushing in the clutch, BEFORE shifting into reverse. You've got to give the gearbox time to spin down all the heavy gears to a near stop before shifting into reverse.
Try it.
This transmission doesn't shift like a car. It shifts like a Mack truck because the gears are heavy suckers.
Here is a warm & fuzzy thought... Every time a quick shift into reverse causes grinding, the reverse gear literally is getting ground down on its leading edge, and the metal particles end up circulating in the oil.
