i just recently purchased a '78 fj40 and the po swapped in an h55f, however i have discovered that he also did away with the diveline mounted emergency brake system.

what are my options at this point?

will the old system mount after an h55f?

are there any?

input is greatly appreciated.

also i am not sure of what transfer i have. can a transfer from the '78 model mount to an h55f?

There is a transfer case parking brake for your application. I know SOR (go the bottom of the page) sells the kit, and I've seen others out there. Many of your exisiting bits work and will be reused (backing plate). Other folks sell it, but the company I bought mine from is no longer in existance.

It should have the split case and the most common options would be the kit mentioned above which keeps the e-brake in the stock location. You can also do a rear disk brake conversion with the calipers that have integrated e-brake, but you would need to extend/adapt your e-brake cable. You could also use "line locks" that use your existing brake circuit, they come in both powered and unpowered versions but some "tech inspections" don't allow line locks as acceptable e-brakes.

This pretty much sums it up...

You could find a FJ60/62 rear axle for cheap and swap it in. To be honest, thats probably one of the cheapest ways. To make your stance right, you'd have to add 1.5" spacers to the front wheels since 60/62 axles are 3" wider.

now can the '78 transfer case from the 4speed tranny bolt to the h55f?

or is the h55f only compatible with a split transfer case?

how can i identify if i have either?

found this parking brake and i used the transfer case mounted one on my '87 runner.

Transfer Case Park Brake

btw thanks for ya'll help!

Yeah, thats a split case t-case e-brake, but like I said, you can get a rear FJ60 axle for a 100 bucks (maybe less since you have the third already.

You have to use split case with H55F IIRC. Its better anyway... The early style 4-speed cases were the gayest cases anyway. They had the higher (1.999:1) gears AND the weak case design...

Don't know how far you are from Houston, but there was a split case on Houston CL a few days back for 100 bucks...

That kit won't work on a LC. I own one that was installed on my 85 4Runner. Didn't like it either.

HUH? They make one specifically for the FJ60 Split case. What doesn't work about it? Or do you mean it doesn't work well?

Even more reason to just swap 60/62 axle(s) in.

08/80 and later 40 series semi-float rear axle will have the same brake/parking brake configuration as the 60 series, and will not require any modiifications to the axle spring perches to install....

I went with the monte carlo disk conversion on the the rear with parking brake on the caliper. I just needed to make a cable to connect it. I didn't want to go with the e brake off the transfer as the drive shaft is short enough with the 5 speed in the 40.

Drop a 40 or 60 series Full Floater in, 60 will give you a wider rear and a little more work to fit.
