Is it still possible to buy these transmissions new? I remember a couple of years ago you could buy them. Are they still offered? If so, where is the best/cheapest place to get them

Yes, it is. They're easy to find (maybe not locally for pick up, but they're easy to source online). They're just not a cheap transmission.

This is keeping in mind that a 4-spd for my old Plymouth would cost me about $150 plus about $200 for a rebuild kit :D

Dan at American Toyota can get them.... other sources are around too. I think you are looking at something around $2K for new (shift lever, trans, knob+shipping).

You can buy 'em brand-spanky new from Mr. Toyoda, or you can buy rebuilds from places like SOR, MAF (with or without attached t'case) even Cruiserparts.net has them. CCOT -- you get the picture.

Call around for best price. It changes. Last I looked was about $2200 new.

CCOT, I thought had a good "kit" for around $2400 ...

Contains all this stuff, so you don't have to track it down separately.

# Kit Includes following Toyota Parts
# Gear Shift Lever and Knob
# Oil Cup
# Transmission Gasket
# Output Shaft Seal
# Transfer case Housing Gasket
# Tap and Fluid Plug (7/16 thread size 1/4 x 18)

If you have a pre 4/85, it comes with the proper bolts to do the swap.

Don't you mean post 4/85?

Nope.

Pre 4-85 needs the longer bolts for the t'case 'cuz the tranny does not have the adapter section.

That was El Cajon Toyota. And that deal was a long time ago... But it's worth a try. I'd also check 1sttoyotaparts.com price.

this is the part # you want: 33030-60450

$2k from toyotapartsdirect.com

Try James at Cruiserparts.net. I think his offer at 2495. includes free shipping to a commercial address. H55's have gone up in price. I paid 1950. for mine about two years ago. They had been 1750. a few months before. I think this has to do with the unstable value of the yen and the dollar and other issues I am not smart enough to understand.
I have no affiliation with James other than both buying the unit from him and having him install it. He knows these transmissions and the attendant frustrations that often are inherent even in these new units.

What tires and gears are you running? I assume that you have that worked out, but unless that is right, the 5th gear will be a joke.

I bought one last month thru my local toyota dealer. At that time he showed 12 units in the USA system. Now it think it's down to like 9. After figuring in shipping, TLCA discounts, time/money easy of picking up the unit... etc...etc...etc... I just bought local.

I went with my local dealer, and he delivered it to my Mechanic for install. In the end I payed maybe $100 more that I could of saved, but it was the easy thing to do for me because shipping would of killed any saving from the other outlets.

I did the same thing as Mark. Ordered it local and delivered directly to who I believe is the same mechanic Mark used. Got my truck back this past Friday and man is it nice to drive. Have to keep reminding myself I have an extra gear when I'm cruising the hwy.

OME lift this week. Sound board and new carpet next week. Finally!

I smuggled mine in from Canada about 10 years ago before they were available. I paid $900 for mine.
Its an option, but the exchange rate was great back then.

Yep, Edwin over at LCS Austin's Land Cruiser Specialist! did my 5 speed swap, and I love it.

How do you like 1st gear? It very LOW, Iam having a hard time getting used to it.

I have an '85 rig w/ 33's that I put the H55 in and an '86 that's stock... The 5 spd is really tough around town. 4spd is much better. with the 5 spd, try starting off in second or doing a quick shift from 1st directly to 3rd, it''l work much better around town. That low 1st is great on the trail though!

Got those tips from Marv Specter and it works.

Or put on larger tires ;)

Yes Sir, I noticed a difference as well and sometimes start off in 2nd gear. How long have you had yours installed? Just curious as to how long the break in takes before it shifts a little smoother.

1st -> 3rd...may have to give that a try around town.

I've had mine a few weeks, maybe a month? I've done two trips to Houston and back, so I've got about 2500K miles so far, and it still seems a bit tight. It's a bit hard to shift when it not warmed up on these cold mornings. I can't imagine what people in really cold weather do. Once Iam on the road for about 3 minutes, it shifts normal.
