I realise there will be differences on transmissions used in 80 series and 100 series due to shift lever positions etc, but my question is specifically relating to the 70 series models, HDJ78/HDJ79 and VDJ76/VDJ78/VDJ79.

What are the differences between H150, H151, and H152? I understand the gear ratios are different. I also understand that the bell housing and input shaft are different for different engines.

But what I am interested to find out, is whether the dimensions of the transmission are physically the same and therefore easily swapped?

Also, what differences, (if any) are there between the transfer box used across the H150, H151, H152? Remembering, this is in relation to 70 series only, with manual shift lever and part time 4WD. Can the transfer box be swapped across the models, and can individual parts such as transfer case housing, be swapped across the models?

Transmissions are all same size. The 100 series separated seat version moves the shifter back-but for a 70 series install you do not want this rare version.
1990-1992 h15x transmissions have a different synchro assembly but more importantly the large front case has NO provisions for the 70 series shifter that mounts to passenger side. That shifter is a straight line shift with a “lift” to get to 4wd.

H152’s are produced for the V8 engine but can easily be changed to a hdt/fz input shsft. The V8 bellhousing is worthless.

Fz bellhousings are their own animal
Hz/hdt/ft/fte are for that block.

Tcases interchange but you want a part time HF1A. I have had best luck ordering the 2001-2006 hdj79 version.
80 series are motor driven as i believe 100 series are.

They are also larger and fitting into a pre 1990 can be difficult. 1990-1998 may have issues with size and mount system.
1999 and later are easy to fit.

My interpretation of the Amayama parts system is that a rear transfer housing for a HDJ79 has a part number of 36104-60010, and a VDJ79 has a part number of 36104-60040.

Is this just a superseded part number, or is this an indication that although the whole transfer box may interchange, the individual parts have differences?

$1861 for vdj vs $1766 hdj which also has pto opening. At amayama.

Minor changes between the rear cases. Probably no pto on vdj. Be warned of duty charges and freight to us.

Be wary of Amayama. They frequently say they have stock of items when they do not.

Partsouq is much better I have found. Megazip is more expensive but typically has items that Partsouq is out of stock of.

I have used Amayama since 2013 with only a single cancelled part. There are partsouq lovers and other facilities like Burj etc. The only source I question is toyotadxb since advertised pricing is artificially low —- but they have sources items that others cannot.

Yes, I wasn't planning to buy from Amayama, I was just using their site to try to compare part numbers to see if second hand parts from different transfers would be interchangeable. Or if the entire transfer would have to be swapped.

I have put a H150 gearbox and relative transfer in my 78 .
the opening of the lever in the cabin are completely different from standard 70 series .
The lever of the H150 is more backwards .
Putting it in second gear with a forward seat could find some obstacle !
You also need to reposition the cross member that holds the gearbox , and shorten the rear drive line .
But nothing too bad .
Gear ratio are in general shorter .
And shifti g through gears is much slower .
Otherwise the gearbox is bomb proof .

There are (at least) 2 H15x shifters - one for 70 series and one for 80 series. @AlbertoSD showed me the way. I have pics side by side somewhere.

70 series: 33530-60730 (currently available on Partsouq for LHD 2022 VDJ79)
80 series: 33530-60202 (currently available on Partsouq for LHD 1997 HDJ80).

The 80 series lever has a backwards angled dogleg that will hit the seat in a 79 series pickup. Ask me how I know. The -60730 does not.

Is there any way to identify a transfer box by looking at it? Like this HF1A mentioned here, is it stamped anywhere on it?

Is there a compatibility list anywhere, matching HF1A with H151, etc?

I know the transmission model is on the vehicle identification plate, but there any way to identify which transmission it is when it's not in a vehicle? Are they stamped or labelled anywhere with H151 etc?
