Cutting out the rust

cut out a ton of rust, the rear sill was a serious PIA to get out! Awl Teq rear sill got painted today and will go in tomm, toyota body mounts were over 30 bones a piece from mr. toyoda so decided to make my own out of flat stock and split heater hose.

I then got in there with a wire brush and then used phosphoric acid to kill all the rust, sprayed a ton of it all over the rust. Then let dry, hit with tri sodium phosphate and wiped dry. A little air hose time, and then 2 coats of zero rust paint. The rear sill and patchwork starts tomm.

forgot to mention that I also cleaned up the cut on the fenderwells, the PO had chopped these away with god knows what, looks like they did it with an ax, a little time with an air saw and then hammer and dolly and they look much better.

did not get as much as I wanted to get done today, hands were killing me today from the last week, made the rear body mounts out of some flat plate and some heater hose. No way I was spending 120 bucks on the OEM body mounts. The rear sill was a PIA to get in. Once I got it in I realized that I am going to have to pull it again and modify the holes in the sill so the sill will go forward more as it is not lining up with the sheet metal on the corners.

some more done

got a few more things done, turns out the rear sill I needed to pull back out and make the holes in it a bit larger in order for it to fit flush with the patch panels in the rear quarter. Finished up the underside welding on the drivers side rocker, still working on the outer (ran out of weld gas). Finished up the wheelwell patches, had some good help making templates from my little shop girl.

more updates soon, have a wagonracks order for a customer traveling through south america. This rack build will be cool for sure, cargo area will be securable and half of the barrier will be able to be pulled quickly to form a sleeping platform. Also have a customers fj40 work next week so it will be a few weeks till I am able to update again.

Lots of life changes lately, going to be working on this resto full time and this truck will be for sale hopefully within the next few months. Look for lots of updates on a weekly basis. This thread will provide proof of work done to the vehicle for the new owner.

It's coming along nicely! Could you do a quick measurement on the rear sill you fabbed? I just need the length from end to end. I think I screwed up and made mine too short. The curved ends aren't lining up with the curve in the 1/4. I didn't have a rear sill to use as a guide since the rust monster ate it away.

I did not fab the rear sill, I purchased it from awl teq awile back, not sure if he is making these anymore

got the sill partly in and the drivers side patching done, really happy with the way it came out, I was able to cut off the bottom curvature and repatch it in to make it look fairly good, hopefully the other side will come out just as nice. The awl teq sill has made this so much more doable, can't imagine having to build the sill from scratch.

Hey Chad, not too much has been done to it lately. Been busy with your truck, then selling my other 40 and now going to do a few things on the 80 to get it ready for Moab and the grand canyon in April.

keep tuned as I am off school for 5 weeks coming up soon and I am going to try to hammer the rest of this 40 out and get it sold on ebay.
