Shipping isn't bad. Looking at $63.08 for tents, $7.01 for awnings, and $31.54 for freezer/fridge.

Am I correct in splitting the shipping cost by volume? These items don't weigh much so size is really the issue for the container.

Just realized there is a few more things I need to do:

1) find custom broker to handle import process or read how to do this
2) find insurance for shipping the items by sea, boats will throw your s*** over if weather gets bad
3) calculate import duty tax

Give me another week before we finalize this.

I sent a couple requests out to customs brokers. Haven't heard back and too busy this week with work to follow up. Work will slow down next week and I can resume bugging people. If anyone knows someone I should reach out to, let me know.

@Teddy, Upstate Cruisers President & ONSC member, works for CH Robinson and may be able to help.......

Thanks JT. I was once on the fence about the awning but now I am looking forward to it. I hope we make something happen in the next two weeks.

Any update?

Good news. @Beau Diddly was able to find a customs broker. Going to call them today to discuss this.
I've spoken to a broker, but they will only sell me a "concierge" service, when I only need a single transaction bond, i.e., $400 vs <$50. This is a racket, but I'll spare you the venting. It's personal now, so I'll find another one, knocking on doors if I have too since all of them are local. Hopefully, news later today...hopefully.

Here I was worried about the Chinese business practice end of this transaction. lol..

I'm going to need someone to take over this from me.

You will need to handle money collection, payment to manufacturer and importer, coordinating with importer on customs paperwork, and pick-up. I might be able to assist with the last piece depending on how work/life is going when these are arriving. I still have a storage unit in Charlotte were items can be held.

Good news. [

Scott - send me a note.

Need to know who the carrier is - I have a friend that might be able to help.

I live in Charleston and have a local importer doing a surety bond for an import I'm bringing in shortly. I can assist with the customs part if someone takes over for Scott. I don't have anything on the order, but just offering to help.

I'm not trying to step on this order, but since no has stepped up yet to coordinate, I'll try to help. I'm making an order on Friday through a different Chinese supplier, though I could push it off until Monday if there's interest. I can order the same refrigerators, but I'm getting a slightly higher quote, presumably a middle-man mark-up since they don't manufacture them. I'm prorating the overhead and guessing on a duty tax of 10%, but it all comes down to how customs classifies it (a 4 volume code, each one in a 4" binder).
  • 45L, $350 + $22-25 shipping (best guess) + $5 bond + $35 +/- duty fee and custom charge = $425, but this could fluctuate up or down slightly
  • 55L, $367+ $22-25 shipping + $5 bond + $35 +/- duty fee and custom charge = $442, but this too could fluctuate
I have to have at least 5 to order and I don't plan on ordering one for myself. Reply to the thread if interested.

Does the supplier offer other equipment similar to what we were all looking at? i.e. awnings tents

Has anyone done a little digging to see if there is already someone in the States already importing this stuff? Let someone else do all the heavy lifting and pay a little more for the product and maybe a little support after the sale as well. Worth looking into.

They do, but they are more than your original quote, so I didn't bring it up. Minimum quantity of 5. I'm going with them because their quality seems to be a little better, the design team won't nickle and dime for logical design changes. They have 3 colors, tan, olive green and grey. Add about 20-25% for fees I mentioned above, but hopefully will be a little less. See pic below.

I'm importing a 30 second pop-up tent, similar to the oz tent. I've made a couple of hardware changes to get around the patent, but instead of paying $1,350 for the large 5-man (including awning and panels), I'm *hoping* to have them <$500, at least for ONSC, UC, and LCLC. I will also have a few of the compact 2-man, but the price will be about $20 cheaper. I was going to wait until I had pics from the factory in a week or two.
