No screen, but the opening faces backwards so I don't really see it catching on many branches. The fornt of the unit it self is rounded so not many place to snag stuff.

It's hard to tell but the interior kind of looks like a cycle type set up, but no screen.

Do those OEM toppers have any kind of filter or screen? I'm trying to decide if I like that bulbous 80 one, but I am worried about the size of it and branches catching on it while wheeling in the wet coast forests.
I like them because they are different vs. the safari model that "everyone" else, but the one nice thing the safari has it that the topper can be reversed so nothing catches on it, or less chance anyways.

MOT!

I'd agree with your assessment, the inside kind of looks like the cone shaped one, kind of 'cycloney'. It's big, but because the opening faces backwards I don't see to much worry about catching it on anything myself.

Jeff,

There is no filter or screen on the OEM unit.

I "believe" the inside of the topper looks similar to the smaller, cone-shaped 70-series' topper, more or less.

I like mine (OEM) just because it stands out, but it might get cumbersome if I had to worry about it catching or getting ripped off from a branch, even though you can fight them off a little in your JDM 80. ;)

I have a Safari snorkel on my truck.

My wife drives mine occasionally - mostly when I'm doing maintenance on her's. She gets stopped and asked, "Whats that?" by weird guys in parking lots. Her standard reply is something to the effect of, "It's my husbands truck. I don't know anything about it. Please leave me alone."

Sometimes people ask me about it. I sometimes say it's an external loudspeaker or a big air horn or a fishing pole holder.

The Safari snorkel intake hook thingy is relatively svelte by comparison to that OEM 80s top hat... You could say, "It's a doppler radar antenna for storm chasing."

But that might extend the conversation.

Yeah, I sometimes tell people that's it's a GPS sensor (since I heard someone on Mud say before).

Are you able to obtain the 80-series snorkel head alone? I already have an OEM snorkel with 70-series topper, but I'd like the 80 one as well.

Relocating the antenna is no big deal, is the hole from the antenna exposed when the snork is mounted? Any more pics of the US spec with the snork installed and antenna removed from above?

I'll see if I can dig one up from another owners install.

My understanding is that the hole from the original snork is totally covered.

I've also talked to a guy who bought a $.25 rubber plug/groomet and put that in the hole which he said worked perfectly.

Here's an install thread link that Fergie and I have contributed to for those interested in this. Looks like we both went for the 70-series topper.
