I'm looking to purchase a 06 with 83k from a friend of mine. It drives great except there is a grinding/vibration when i let off the gas. This is most noticeable at lower speeds but it does it at pretty much any speed. I can feel it in the pedal and in the steering wheel. I also smelled hot gear oil. Does anyone know what this could be? The local dealer is too busy with recalls to give me much time for an inspection.

Could be any number of things. When my pinion bearing went out this past year it caused the t-case to run extra hot. As you can imagine I had a nasty drive-line vibe along with gear oil smell along with a fairly hot floorboard right above the t-case.

I'd be shocked if this was your issue given its an '06 and all OEM. Wheel bearings? Check your drive-shaft bolts/nuts. Inspect the CV boots looking for signs of leakage/neglect.

One way or another you're going to have to get it on a rack and give it a good visual inspection. From there its going to be a matter of eliminating various components of the whole drive-train.

Check diff and t-case fluid levels along with any signs of leaks.

Thanks, Got under it this morning and could see alot of moter oil and the transmission had some leaking too.
I'm taking it this afternoon to have a look.

I did notice the floor board a bit warm.thanks for the tips.

talked to the head tech. at dealer and he said the 06 is having some tranny problems. i'll find out more.

the 99 with 130k is looking better by the minute. id rather mod the 99 anyway.

the tranny would still be under warranty on the 06..

turns out the front diff is shot. it was leaking like a sieve. pulled the plug and it had plenty of shavings. the owner is willing to take the price out to get it fixed so i will probably do it.

Where is the cheapest place to buy a toyota diff. or should i just go with the arb? this might be the wifes ride for a year or two.

i was wrong about the 06 having tranny problems. he said the earlier models did which I know is no new news.

Do yourself a favor and have the ARB installed at the same time they rebuild the 3rd and be done with it. And don't kid yourself: You don't have to be a hard-core trail wheeler to risk damaging the front diff on a 100. Theoretically the '00 models are stronger...but you just found out they're not strong enough.

If you want to buy a complete 3rd member already set up with the ARB (or without) contact Carl at ringpinion.biz here on MUD.

oh, well then he should buy one of those then....:p

From a front diff perspective I think you're onto something :)
