Hey guys, I figured this is a story to be told.
A few months ago I ordered a set of DIY beadlock rings from Dan @ Ruffstuff specialties. About a week later I got a package but it was just the rings, no anti-coning rings that I ordered. So I called Dan and he said he was out of the anticoning rings when he shipped mine off so, to save time he asked his anti-coning ring supplier to send them directly to me. A couple days later I got the coning rings.
I install them and assemble them and torque to 13 lbs on the 33 bolts! Then I fill it with air and it leaks BAD. So I disassembe and reassemble...same. I try silicone, I try different tourques up to about 35 ft lbs, I try different tires, I even go over my welds....Still lots of leaking! By this time I had been in contact with Dan several times and he was as interested in solving the problem as I was, bc of "600 sets" he had never heard of this. I finally got them to somewhat hold air with 35ish ft lbs and LOTS of silicone! So I was off to the trail. I aired down to about 6lbs. And after about 20 min I noticed the tires were very low and they were at just a couple lbs!! I aired them up to 7-10lbs and hit the next trail. about half way through one was flat. I got out and the tire had slid out of the beadlock!
So I used a buddies spare and about 10 ft later another tire slid out! I limped back and my day was done.
I called Dan. The only thing we could think of was the anti-coning rings were some how causing the problem. So I tore them down again and cut the coning rings off. Dan insisted on refunding me the price of the coning rings. I refused at that point until we knew exactly what was wrong. Presto! everything was great again, I wheel a few more trips with no problems. Then on the way to the Badlands I get a flat. I get out to check it. No nails, no nothing. So I air it back up and its leaking like crazy from the where the beadlock ring hits the tire?!?! I mount Gumbys spare and make it to camp where instead of drinking/eating I tear down the beadlock again. (33 bolts, no nutserts, so 2 wrenches, and crappy grainger bolts that inevitably all 150 of them broke!!!) I find that there is a cut around the tire where the beadlock hits the tire...
I call Dan right there from camp. He said that he had recently found out some interesting info...THE ANTI-CONING RING SUPPLIER SUPPLIED MY ORDER WITH 5/8" RINGS RATHER THAN 1/2" RINGS. This caused the beadlock ring to go convex and actually dig into the tire! and allowed the tire to slip out of the bead lock and leak due to most of the tourque being on the coning ring.
He not only said he would replace my tire but wanted to find out how one could be dropped shipped to camp so I could have it for the weekend!! I said no need as I have an exact spare (thanks Gumby). I called Dan on Monday and set up a shipment of 1 new 36" tsl sx!!!
I then proceeded to break down all the tires AGAIN! and found that they were all damaged
Not as bad as the leaker, but still cut. I contacted Dan and gave him the bad news. Which I was reluctant to do bc I HATE receiving charity, but I had no choice I couldnt afford a new set. So he said he would replace all of them!!!
I decided I wanted to run some pitbulls so Dan credited me for 3 sx's (minus the one in transit) and to make a long story short ive got some new 37" Rockers.
Dan is a stand up guy and went above and beyond for SOMEONE ELSES MISTAKE!
Thanks for reading this, and buy stuff from Dan.
