I need a GPS for my directionally challenged wife. It needs to be simple to use and easy to hear. It does not need to have TOPO maps. I do not need traffic reports. It does not need to respond to voice prompts. KISS is the plan here.

Anyone have EXPERIENCE with a GPS fitting this need please chime in... I will be doing my own online research... but if there is a good reviews website you know of I'd like to hear about it....

Thanks,
mark

The Garmin 260W is a very female friendly unit. I have given two different girlfriends this model and neither had difficulties using it. :D

I would also get the optional dashboard friction mount.

Thanks for the info... I was reading about the TomTom 130s... and the TomTom XL 330s... so this Garmin info is interesting.. I'll check it out.

So was it because of the Garmin that you lost the 1st girlfriend or are you running 2 GFs at the same time... I guess it WOULD be easier if they both have the same GPS...

Running two. :D

I don't know anything about the Tom Tom. Neither of the GFs' unit has had problems and that says a lot.

I have a couple of pricier Garmin's for my vehicles + handheld + bicycling units and am a big fan of the company. The few times that I have needed help, the customer service has been great.

Hey Mark:

My son has a Garmin 205W, we used it on a roadtrip over the 4th weekend, I was totally impressed. Very easy to use, more info on that thing than I expected. We have several handheld GPS units floating around our school, and Garmin rules the roost in this category as far as we can tell. Excellent customer service.

Get over to the For Sale section and make a deal with Skim on that 250W.

thanks for the info... the 250w does not do text to speech (speaking street names) afaik

Well, to be honest we muted the voice after about 5 minutes into the trip, never turned it back on. It was just plain annoying.

My wife, who freely admits to be able to get lost in a parking lot, told me to recommend the Navigon 5100, which includes traffic and she uses it to travel around Southeast Wisconsin and Northeast Illinois. Good maps, great graphics and prompts and adjustable volume. She is able to hear it in the soft top Jeep at highway speeds. :princess:

Mark,

I picked up the Garmin Nuvi 350 primarily due to the "speech to text" feature. The hot little GPS lady (can choose men or women) says the name of the street to turn on vs "turn on next street". This is a tiny point but I like the fact that you can simply act based on audio cues from the GPS. I'm also partial to the form factor of the Nuvi and similar units with a flat back. This makes it more portable, slips into purses, pockets, etc.

Good luck.

edit: mine was used from Fleebay for $100. FYI.

Mark,

I've been really happy with my Garmin Streetpilot 2720. More importantly Wen has never had any issues using it and you how temperamental she can be. Since this purchase I'm kind of partial to Garmin because the company I work for sells their aviation products and in turn we receive a pretty screaming deal on hand-held, auto and marine units. Regardless, the best advice I can off is exactly what alia176 mentioned. Spend your money on a unit that gives street names for turn rather than 'turn left in 100 feet'. You will be happy you did.

got the Garmin Nuvi 760 and it works like a dream.... especially for my wife... now I have to get one for myself because I am never going to see that thing again. I got it because of the timeing and the price. the screen size is good, it has blue tooth, which is great for a car that was built in 93' its got enough features to keep us occupied and you can download maps for different regions of the earth. having said that you could probably get the same capabilities in somthing a little smaller with some bells and whistles left off as well. your choice. mine is what I like.

Tom Tom One 3rd Gen.

Cheap, works fine, and verrrrry easy. I think they are like under $200.
