Yeah I'm dreading this one:

Jacked up the truck the other day to adjust brakes and what not. Well I left it sitting over night on a jack so a rear wheel was off the ground... well I come in the next day after work to finish the brake check I jack up and pull up off the other wheel (which had goop in it previously that I cleaned ... thinking it was a leaking wheel cylinder)... well I take the drum housing off and guess whats sitting there for me to get mad at. Gear oil... its gear oil b/c it smells like death. I look up in there and its leaking from behind the brake shoe. I did have the gears in neutral (tans and transfer case) but that shouldn't matter.

I'm afraid of the damage here... I tried to search but couldn't find anything.

Axle seal... sounds like it... its just a slight drip... but if its sitting flat there is nothing. Only if its at a angle.

Front or rear? Either one is going to be a messy job.
If it's the front leaking a knuckle rebuild is in your future. Get the Marlin seals. (Search Marlin seals for a link)
If it's the rear you just need the seals and a day of your time. You will have to drain the diff oil, pull the diff cover, remove the C clips from the axles, pull the axles out. remove the axle seals and replace them. Then reverse the procedure. My web site has detailed instructions for both procedures with pics. Link in my sig.

lol. I'm in the middle of this now.

fyi, I have a spare Selectro locking hub(the part that bolts to the front axle) that I used it to drive the new bearing and seal in with the slide hammer.

I have a thread going that I'll update this eve.

I agree, it a telltale sign of a bad axle seal. While you're fixing it, check the diff breather to make sure it's not clogged with mud or something or it will ruin the seal again.

Might want to do what gmarshall is doing, and replace the bearings while your in there..

looks like there goes another 100 bucks and a saturday:) haha...

I noticed that there is a braether valve on each side of the pumpkin... mysteriously the side with the leak ... has a crushed breather........ yay!

how the crap do you crush it!

i quit :)

where you located in GA gmarshall.. im here too

I'm in Cartersville, and you?

Good idea! He's probably still got all his tools out.;)

yep, both of them. lol.

just a wheel seal. you may be fine. if you plan on leaving them sitting on jackstands, have the axle level next time. i did that once, never did change the seal and it was fine.
