When they say 'extremely rare motor' does that mean extremely hard to find parts for ?
yeah but since it's a diesel and it's a toyota it should last forever 8) , just go ahead and get it Tyler, you know you want it. :D

I didn't pay that much for my entire 1993 cruiser!

$6000 is what you could probably get that same set up for else where in NA. If I was going to go to the expense I'd get the Turbo. And yes I know about the 1HD=T big end bearing problems, but they are fixable. It wouldn't be that much more to get the turbo and you'd definitely enjoy the whistle.

Join the TLCA and get 10% off. There's some incentive if I've ever heard of it. At least I'm assuming it's the TLCA and not Costco. ;)

TLCA wouldn't get you 10% off from sor.com. Joining their club would. TLCA does get you discounts from a lot of vendors. For this particular motor (diesel), it is best to look north to the Canadians who are having a good time importing Cruisers from Japan. Also just FYI, Forklift motors have no duty from Canada to US. I was offered a complete HDJ-81 (I think that is right w/ 1HD-T) with a smashed front fender and light. The grill and hood was good. It was RHD and was only available as parts. $10,900 US dollars before duty to get it from Canada to the US. My big problem besides money was parts location. Getting parts for even my BJ60 was a pain.

Eric, I am curious how a rhd hdj81 or any rhd 80 got into Canada. Supposedly, you cannot legally import anything later than a 1990 model here. Was it on the road before the accident?

Th real question is how far you would have to drive a $9300 diesel to recover the cost of it from fuel savings. By my math it's about 125,000 miles if the diesel gets 30 mpg and the gas gets 15 mpg. Of course, that doesn't factor in the install ;)
Come on now, don't go getting practical ::) That just ruins it >:( Besides aren't we all gonna keep our cruisers for another 125k? :D

Your not going to get 30mpg in a diesel 80 not even making it part time. So it would take a lot longer to recover the costs. low 20s I think is about what they get.

The HDJ-81 was imported as parts. It was a complete rig. It was crashed in Japan. It had funky cloth seats with TURBO embroidered in them. Must have been about January or Feb. of 2003 when I had this opportunity. We had just had our baby and my wife was still on leave. In other words I was broke, so I didn't have the cash to take the deal. Plus I was a little soured on Toyota diesel parts availability after my BJ60. And BJs are by far the easiest Toyota diesel to get parts for. Much easier than the diesel Camrys, Corollas, and HiLuxes. But you still can't walk into a local autoparts store and say I need a diaphram for a 83 BJ60. HDTs would be much tougher to get parts as I'm not even sure they used these in mines. HZ parts are a little easier to get parts from Toyota industrial stuff. I hauled a 1HZ motor from Canada for a guy in California a few summers ago. I just happened to be going the right way at the time. Man it was rusty as it came out of a mine. Neat motor but I'm not sure I could have dealt with the parts finding later down the road.

What are the specs on that engine (hp & torque). Its not a tubo diesel right??? Can you mod a turbo on there??? That would be soooo cool to have a 1HZT. Could you also have a intercooler on there? You'd also be able to chip it and get a sh!t load of torque from that thing. If Toyota would've put this engine as an option for the 80 series, this would be the ultimate Cruiser! I'd rather get that engine rather than, say a Chevy 350 or even a Vortec. That engine is more reliable/better than any other replacement engine out there, in my oppinion.

I don't have my conversions handy right now. The 1HD-T did have some problems with big end bearings. If you do a search on 80scool you should be able to find plenty of information on the bearing problem. I guess it would be pretty simple to swap out the bearings prior to installing it in a US spec'd Cruiser. Parts can be the biggest issue. Some Toyota dealers are pretty cool about working with you to get non USA parts. Some will just tell you that you are screwed. Because of where I live I've sort of avoided the non North American diesels. I wouldn't hesitate to buy an HJ60 or a BJ60 or BJ42 because parts are at least available in Canada. You aren't going to have to wait for them to come from Japan or Australia. The highest HP diesel is the 1HD-FTE which is computerized. Neat motor but I bet it would be a headache if you weren't real capable with diesels.

Awesome the 1HD-FTE puts out 205 hp and 318 lbs of torque! :o Oh man if I could get my hands on that! The 1HD-FTE is a Turbo, correct? So many mods you could do to that engine! Sooo excited right now for no reason. Too bad you can't find this anywhere. Hell the Cruiser already sounds like it has a diesel within, why not just put one in? This is the engine that the Cruiser needs!
