anyone been there?

was looking at some pics there on facebook and looked like a cool place to visit

anyone have any directions? google had nothing.

gorges, its a state park in NC.

Glutches is closer to where i live...but gorges is closer to the mountains. Supposed to be 30 miles of scenic trails and some water passes. Not really "wheeling" but some rought terrain and you cross a few waterways.

Gorges is across the state line going into NC taking 178.

I'm thinking about hitting it up after horse pasture since they are only 20-30 min apart.

I know the place you speak of.

the very same!

wed the 15th of SEPT...not next year in aug lol

The area/road we traveled in the pictures above has been closed. It was the Frozen Creek/ Auger Hole road access. The area you are really trying to access is the Toxaway Game lands.... you still enter the area via Gorges state park just no longer thru the Frozen Creek access as we always had. Also access used to be seasonal based on hunting so you might want to check and see if you can get in.

It is def. a cool ride if you are in the area, nothing challenging, but very senic.... I believe the only real water crossing (the toxaway river) now lies inside the closed section of road :frown:. The rest of the crossing have bridges if I remember correctly. If you do hit it up let us know what you find.... I would be interested to know if they graded all the roads when they cut in the new access or if the left them unmaintinaed??

here is some info. I dug up:

Looks like a neat place.

it certianly wasn't 2nd, and what you can't see it Marshall hunched over in the pass. seat holding the 4wd shifter in place so it will keep from popping out of 4-lo :hillbilly:

That's what ima talkin' 'bout!

the upstate club 4x4 is going this sunday, i'll hit up those guys after they get back, if they say it's worth checking out i'm going.

I'll definately let you guys know what i find if anything.

They told me that the park recomends vehicles with 18" ground clearance for water way passes in that part of the park. Hope that means something promising.

I wouldn't mind riding this. I have the road tires on Bonnie and would like to keep them at least until after the Boil at Carolina Beach. I think I can manage this one on street skins.

With Cullowhee and Tellico gone, and Gorges being nasty and like URE either boring or body damage, I haven't been in the woods in a while.
If I haven't found anywhere by spring I'm going back to the promised land and to heck with the consequences.

if you go back on the promise land let me know! I'll take the registration/tags off of the jeep i just purchased....if we get busted...i'm taking off on foot! I'll leave the flip flops behind, i run faster barefoot anyway.

I'm sure i'll get bored with the pasture quickly

I'm hoping i can get atleast one other rig to come up to this with me. With all this rain we are getting i've been told the waterways in the mountains are up more than normal

Would this place be appropriate to hook into the BRP ride on 16 Oct?
Like we talked about at the annual mtg, maybe a combo day ride for the daytrippers and a minor expedition weekend for the wheeler/campers?
There's Black Balsam, the campground near Mt Mitchell, and maybe this place all in the general area.
If ya'll like it maybe we get a combo thread going and a moderator can point the various threads into it.
Or keep the three, just a thought.
Just saying: Let's wheel, at least a little bit.

I would love to make it out on the 16th but two days in a row off at work...better chance on me winning the lottery...then i would have alot of days off of work

That was an awesome trip....don't worry though I'm gettin close to workin on the tranny swap so Marshall won't have to ride shotgun and keep the cruiser in 4 wheel drive.
