After many good years of wheeling my old MT/R's with absolutely no problems, it has reached the time that I must part with them. I have delayed this several times and researched the new tires out there several hundred times. After much toil, I decided to replace my old MT/R's with the new MT/R's. I finally made the call to my friend over at The Local Discout Tire and asked him to get them on the way and I would be by in a few days. He called me back with a confused sound in his voice and said "I can't get them." He followed that with, "we don't have any stocked locally or nationally." He said he called Goodyear and his rep there said "We don't have a production date scheduled for them in the system, but I will let you know if that changes." A month later, I haven't heard anything, which means he hasn't heard anything, which leaves me wondering if Goodyear has shelved another tire. I'm sure that if I searched, I could find a set. I'm no longer interested in that after buying a brand new set of Bridgestone's for the wife's Land Cruiser four months ago. She cut one and when I took it to replace, they were discontinued. The tire they replaced it with looks similar, but makes the vehicle pull that direction. Guess I will be going with BFG this time around since nobody else appears to want to provide long term support for tires.

Whatever tire you get at Americas Tire you have the option of a free replacemant policy.

As for them not making MTR Kevlars anymore.

It's probably because they don't hold up very well, neither did the first generation. I bought 5 in 09 and had to replace one 8 months later and 2 including the kevlar that replaced the first one last October. The kevlar had a inch and a half opening in the sidewall and the tread still looked fairly new(what a shame). I was glad the MTRs were not available, that meant I could go back to the Iroks. The Iroks take a hell of a lot of abuse without sidewall damage.

I have been happy with with my BFG KM2s. Great tire. Toyo is another great option.

Have any of you that are dissing them wheeled with the newer MTR's?

I have a set, and they are vastly better then the old style MTR's.. (I was a big fan of the old style too)

Better traction on the rocks, ride's like a gokart on the street! (40"x 13.5")

Maybe I just got a good set?

Oh and that sucks if they discontinued them, cause I would have bought another set.

For general off-road explore/all around use I've had good luck with the MT/R Kevlars...I like their relative narrow tread width compared to Toyo MT...plus they're about 10lbs lighter per tire than the Toyo MT. Having said that the Toyo MT (and even their OC AT) offer, quite possibly, the toughest casing & sidewall construction for a radial tire in the biz.

After 4-sets of the old MT/R I swore I'd never buy another Goodyear anything. Couldn't get some of them to balance; crap on ice/snow. Yes they did wear well...but I am getting about 32k miles out of the Kevlar's...pretty good for a tire with a high amount of void (at least for 50% of their tread style ;)). And based upon the 8+ Kevlar's I've owned GY must have improved their molds and/or QC because I haven't had the imbalance issues so prevalent with the prior version.

I suspect the MT market is too lucrative to ignore. So if indeed they are discontinuing the MT/R Kevlar they're sure to intro its replacement.

Goodyear gets military tire contracts and stops MTR production to make the tires, this has happened several times during my MTR owning days, nothing will be available for months then a flood of them will be on the market.
FYI the Toyo MT is a far better tire for the same price.

Did you try tirerack?

Im in the same boat had 4 old style mtr and cut a side wall. Want a new set but no 35 15" but could get a few sets in 16" rims I'm waiting supposed to be end of month heard that for two months now.

I was in the opposite situation 9 months ago. I wanted a set of KM2s, but they were backordered, so I got the MT/Rs, which were in stock. GY had them on sale for $276 in 315.75.16 and with the GY and Discount tire rebate of $45 each they were cheaper at $231 each. I have been happy with them. They work well in rocks, sand and snow and they are comparable to BFG/AT tires in road noise. I haven't had them in mud yet because we don't have to get into it in So. Ca. that often.

This thread discusses their pros and cons with people who can run any tire they want and have run most of them.

I like the new MTR look .. and like the fact that it's road friendly ( as much as the old model was ) but with off road traction improvement .. what it's really complicate to me it's put 'em over my MT Toyo's .. what a great tire they are ..

I'm a big fan of the Toyo MT. Great in the mud, havent taken it out to the rocks just yet. 315/75/16 measures right at 34.9"

I had a set of the old MT/R's (31x10.50) for about 5 years. Drove them back and forth to California twice from Colorado, a few Moab trips and all sorts of trips at home in Colorado. Snow, ice, dirt, mud, rocks, never a problem. Loved those tires. I was bummed that I couldn't get that tire anymore, so I moved on to the Kevlars (37x12.50). I've only been on a few runs, including a drive out to Moab, and a few CO trips... love them so far. Not seeing where the hate is coming from.
