Hi,

I've searched this forum and have read a lot of threads of people swapping a 2h into a fj60 but can't seem to find anything for doing it the other way around.

I've got a hj60 and pretty sure I've killed the 2h. Not really sure what path to take, a friend of a friend has a 2f that has had a bit of work done to it which I can pick up for $200. He said it will drop straight into my hj. The 2f has a 350 holley, diesel cam, and some after market pistons, and apparently gets off the line quite nicely.

I'm very keen to swap it for the 2h, but I have a few questions which I was hoping you guys could help me answer.

1. Will I be able to pull out the 2h while leaving the gearbox in place and then slide in the 2f?

2. Can I use my existing fuel tank, pump, radiator, a/c pump, steering pump?

3. Is there anything that I should be aware of as far as difficulty or thats going to cost a lot of $$$?

My plan of attack is to get the motor mounted in, do all that I can regarding the mechanics, and then get in an auto electrician for a few hours if needed to get the electrical soughted out.

It sounds a bit too easy in my head and no doubt I'm missing some complicated bits. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Johnny.

Johnny: Take a deep breath. Rebuild your diesel. I predict that the $200 bucks that you pay your friend is just start up money compared to what you will spend making the conversion work. You have a set up that many cruiser guys would kill for. Why do the swap? Just my thoughts; I have 2 rigs with 2Fs and that motor, other than being simple and reliable, is nothing to get worked up about.

DON"T DO IT!!!!!!! Rebuild the 2H and drive on for another 1/2 million miles.

Dynosoar:zilla:

Lesse, besides the motor you are gonna need a wiring harness, ignition system, motor mount tabs on the frame, cooling system, exhaust, bell housing, clutch fork and starter, fuel system, air cleaner assembly..... and possibly more stuff.

Given the headache and suffering of sourcing all this, it makes sense to consider putting your 2H together again and motor on for another 400k miles. Unless you really like the idea of a gas motor...

WTF is a "diesel cam"?

1. Will I be able to pull out the 2h while leaving the gearbox in place and then slide in the 2f?
The 2F will bolt to the front of the 2H tranny, but the engine mounts don't bolt up. The 2H mounts will need cut off the frame and mounts from a 2F truck will need welded on. Or fabricate new mounts.

2. Can I use my existing fuel tank, pump, radiator, a/c pump, steering pump?
Typically, diesel tanks are different, less venting apparatus.
dunno what pump you're talking about.
Dunno if F and H radiator and AC are different.
Steering pumps are quite different. 2F has a craptastic pump that is failure prone.
2H has a much better pump, basically a beefier version of minitruck PS pump. The PS pumps are not interchangeable.

3. Is there anything that I should be aware of as far as difficulty or thats going to cost a lot of $$$?

Free advice:
Repair the 2H and be happy.
Or sell the broken 2H truck and buy a 2F truck.

Dude, that's crazy talk! :p Keep the 2H and be happy.

cheers for all the replies.

Ok, I've come to my senses and I'm getting the 2h looked at today or tomorrow. Hopefully the news is not too bad. The more I think about it, the more I want to keep the 2h. Now when I hear other diesels on the road it saddens me that I might be parting with mine. :whoops:

She starts fine, and doesn't seem to miss at idle, but blows a crap load of white/grey/blue smoke and I'm afraid to find out the verdict.
Hopefully she will be back on the road to make the Frasier trip coming up. fingers crossed.

Cheers,
Johnny.

My guess is a cracked head. Expensive but not the end of the world.

I'm with everyone else! Even though diesel is currently GROSSLY overpriced it's still a better deal than gasoline.

Damn .. lots of stuff to deal in this swap ..

1. Rad are diferents ( nothing really radical but money )
2. the 2H PS pump you know it's in the worse part of the engine ..
3. exhaust ( more money )
4. Motor mounts ( more money )

What happend to your 2H .. there are very reliable engines .. that last forever .. ?

Like Cruiser Guy said I would be willing to bet that the pre-chambers in the head are cracked which isnt that uncommon. Either way a head rebuild is WAY cheaper than a engine swap.

I'm fairly new to diesels, but isn't it possible that his symptoms of blowing smoke possibly a fuel delivery failure?

jonnycruiser, (JC, haha) how does it run? Ae there any other symptoms like difficult starting, cranks slow or uneven or loss of power?

Also, what pump do you have? Does your IP have a diaphram? It is possible you have a less than dramatic motor failure.
