I'm due for a set of new tires, any advice on a set of "beefy" but fairly quiet all-terrain tires? I like a bit stubby for ocassional mountain roads but mainly drive my LC in the city streets and highway...

Search bro. There are tons of tire threads. Personally I like Nitro Terra Grapplers if you want next to no additional road noise. If you can tolerate some very mild humming, check out the Goodyear DuraTrac. I've been very pleased with them so far.

Somebody buy the Michelin AT2's and tell me if they perform better than the wimpy perception given by the appearance.

Nitto TG. End of discussion :)

I would agree with ^ this ^ ... assuming you don't consider BFG ATs.

It's like when radio DJs stopped including "Stairway to Heaven" in the top 100 countdown. They all said "Okay, it's the best song ever... So, other than Stairway to Heaven, what's the #1 song of all time?"

So yeah, the Nittos are good too... a solid #2 on this year's chart ;)

Okay seriously... I put these on last week. They replaced the stock Michelins that had around 50% tread left. I had hoped they'd be as comfortable/compliant and not much louder. I was blown away - they're MUCH more comfy than those crap Michelin Latitude HPs and just as quite. I think the 100 takes credit for the tires being quite - it's such a solid, well insulated truck.

And the BFGs just have that classic look... fitting for a Land Cruiser

something like this would be nice for daily use. beefy, and according to 2000UZJ fairly quiet. meets your criteria perfectly. ;)

the steering wheel would shake violently when I turned, those side lugs where so huge it would make it feel like a rumble strip.

I would put those on a street driven 100 any day  :flipoff2:

Seriously,

if your 100 is mainly on the street then go with a Nitto Terra Grappler or a BFG AT. A Duratrac is nice, but I see it as a AT/MT and will wear faster than the other two, as well as produce more noise.

Try the new BFG Rugged Terrain T/As. They look the part from the side view but are more road friendly that the A/Ts.

The step up from that would be the BFG A/Ts which are tiny bit louder that the OEM tires and the Nitto Terra Grapplers.

I considered those before getting the ATs. Scouring the interwebs... I found lots of discussion on other forums - all bad; lots and lots of bad reviews. I did read that Rugged Terrain was developed for the Tundra. Thought that was cool... until all the bad reviews.

I have had the BFG AT on previous vehicles but never on my LC. I liked them a lot and always had good results with them. Yesterday I installed Nitto Trra Grapplers and I think they would fit your bill perfectly. They are fairly quiet and smooth.
You can't really go wrong with either.

I'm not stopping you.
I am close to pulling the trigger on some tires. Got bumped in the rear plastic... awaiting a $500 Payout. My heart says go with manly
KM2's, but logic says buy something more fuel friendly. I can't find a bad review on Michelin AT2's.
tire prices are equal:hhmm::hhmm::hhmm::hhmm:

you live in Texas - everything is bigger. Go Manly or go home :)

You might be surprised how refined they are on a 100 compared to an LR, not much worse than km2's :D

I bought the Michelin LTX M/S 2's in 285/75/16 Load Range E. They feel great for highway driving, can't say how they are for Off-Road yet.

MS2 and AT2 are two completely different tires...

The BFG AT's are swell if you never, ever, ever drive in the mud. If you do they load up faster than your second cousin at an open wedding bar. And as an extra bonus they DO NOT self clear. So within a few feet your diving on slicks.

BTW I've worn out at least three sets of BFG AT's on different rigs so it's not that I don't like the tire. And they do wear well. They are great for highway, snow, gravel, just not mud. And they chunk pretty bad on rocks, work well, but they chunk out pretty fast if you use them that way.

On my truck I have the Toyo MTR's. Not a great tire if you don't like a little highway noise and a stiff ride. Other than that I have loved them in all conditions.

I'm seriously considering replacing the Toyo's with the Michelin AT's. The stock Michelin offroad tires that came with the rig worked pretty well for me and I really don't take my truck offroad that much, at least not tough offroad. I'd like to see if the Michelin's get a little better MPG than the heavy ass Toyo's. Our truck is my :princess: DD and when we use it for other occasions it tends to be "drive a lot of highway miles then do some mild off roading" kind of stuff.

At least take a look at the Destination MT. They are very aggressive, do great in mud and much quieter than a KM2 and are almost rated exactly the same on tire rack. I have had 3 sets and love them.
