Hello, fellers:

Over the past few days I have been thinking about the less fortunate people in our community (ies). I have a hope that we could be a resource to make life a wee bit better for them. I have a few ideas of what we could do, but I'd like to ask all of you for your ideas and support. This is not just for the holidays, but throughout the year.

Okay, the forum is open. Please post your ideas here.

JP: May I have a sticky, please?

I think our hurricane relief drive was a big success maybe we should try and do just a normal food drive every 4 or 6 months. I wouldnt want to go to frequently just because then people get tired of seeing it over and over. Also a toys for tots type thing at xmas although its kind of late this yr.

I like the idea. Maybe volunteer to help an orginization. Like sign up for hands on Greenville. That way we have someone picking the people who need it most. I'll ask Becca about it since she has done it for EP a couple of times.

We also need to have a trails maint day. And find some place that would let us do it.

yeah maybe a "meals on wheels" thing I don't know if greenville has such a set-up, but I know we have it hear in Augusta I used to volunteer during high school.........

Little late for this year, but alot of places have where you can adopt a family and go shop foro what they need/want. Wife and I did this a few years abck with a family in her work. Project angel tree is another good one that could be done. Food drive is a good idea. There shoudl be some food banks around. I used to help out at one when I was younger with my mom back in Newberry.

Charity

I'm thinking something that is an annual event for
member participation. Something we can build
toward each year. Have a "drive" all year, so to
speak, with a larger impact and "splash" if you will.
There are a LOT of needs out there.
I know meals on wheels would LOVE us to volunteer
snow deliveries. Pick a community. Pickens, a.k.a.
home of the Mafia, certainly has needy shut ins who
depend on those meals, but, I'm just using that as
an example of charity that isn't routine but would fill a
great need.
The yearly thing would be fun. Raise $ all year and being Santa
to some unfortunate kids is hard to beat. Santa Cruise is coming to town. :)
Just some thoughts.
GREAT POST ALEX!!!!!!......hehe... another reason we made you Pres, Sir!

What about a habitat house if we could get all the club members to be involved for at least one day we could probably do it in a week. Especially when you consider how we usually end up with several non members at events too.

A little late this year as someone else mentioned, but I've always participated in Toys for Tots in this neck of the woods and it's an awesome deal. We usually bundle it with a soiree of some sort where folks show up with gifts in hand (admission to the festivities) and then a group of us takes them to the drop off point the next day.

A bit simple and only once a year, but it's definitely a great cause to needy kids without gifts during the holidays.

Maybe a jacket/clothes drive for kids? I knew a group that did a Meals on Wheels day and incorporated a Poker Run into the whole deal, they had a blast (and helped people).

Good idea! How do you all feel about making Pickens County our target for help? I may be wrong, but it seems to me that perhaps the people out there may need us more? What do you fellers think?

Never heard of Habitat house Alex? Its probably one of the most recognized and influential programs out there. Former President Jimmy Carter is the big Habitat spokesman. Basically they provide everything the site, the tools, the materials, etc. and you provide the labor. Usually its 1 week long and you build a house for a family that doesnt have one. I figure we have like 50 members right, if we get each person to commit 1 full day of work 1 day being like a 10 hr day and then anything else is extra. I'm sure a lot of us would be willing to put in more then a day plus we all have family and friends that would probably donate some time as well. We should be able to build the house without a lot of problem I would think. They do one on bowman field in clemson every yr for homecoming week. And the whole thing is done by whoever walks by and signs up and its usually about 60% women doing it. I'm not sure what the obligations with Habitat for Humanity are if you have to have a commited amount of time and stuff before they will go through it with you or what. But I have seen them done in VA and here and have never seen one that didnt get built in time.

I know right, I went to the habitat website and couldnt really find the info we needed so I emailed one of the local (to clemson) habitat organizations about us sponsoring a house to try and find out what we would have to do.

Good job! Please let us know what you find.

I imagine it will be after xmas if not the new yr but I will put up what I find out as soon as I know.

Who if not you; I if not now

to bad we don't have someone in construction or maybe even an architect in the club :grinpimp: then it'd really be a breeze to do one of these habitat things

By George we do got 'em! A Clemens Architek, and two builders, A good 'ol Florida Boy and a UNOWHO know it all from Cleveland. We are set. ;)

Yeah I think we definitely have the #'s and some good associated knowlegde. This might only be a once every 2 yrs type thing though. A habitat house is a massive undertaking. We will just need to see what they tell me.
