Good work Richard and congrats at this point on becoming an alumnus!

Thanks Tad, I guess I can say I'm the smartest member of the mafia now and there really is no way to argue it.

The way I have seen habitat houses work in the past is you find out where they are building one and you go and help out. I'm not sure if we could actually do one on our own in the time alotted for the projects. Most are on a time table I believe. But I would definately be in for doin some buildin.

Chuck you get 1 week usually. Thats up near the top of the post 2 times. And as I said before if we get every member to commit 1 day and I would expect a lot of members would put in some extra time beyond that I think we would be able to do it. As for sponsoring it the one done at homecoming is sponsored by like the student govt or student alumni assoc or something like that. So I'm pretty sure we can sponsor it.

rudy you should look into how many is in the crew when they do the home coming, like how many labors at one time, how many man hours it usually take them...... I am sure someone at the university can give you a break down of what it takes them to complete the project; I imagine it is a lot of work/ man hours

Well I know that no one is like scheduled or anything. Its all done completely volunteer. Like I said Katies sorority just shows up and they do whatever they get told. I dont recall ever seeing more then maybe 10-15 people there at any given time. The key thing is there are always at least a few there the entire time so the work never stops.

Just a ballpark I'd say 500-700 hrs. Which is a pretty good amount of time, even at 700 hrs thats only 14 per person across 50 club members though. If you think about it a whole house in that time is pretty amazing. Granted they arent the most elaborate houses but they can be lived in once they are put on site.

googled "habitat for humanity man hours" find man hours ranging from a low of 1,000 to a high of 2,400 hours......... might be a little more than we can handle, althought I would love to do it, maybe we join up with other local clubs. I know there is another 4x4 club in greenville "Tricks and Traction" I believe

Thats a possibility, what about all the heepers from the clemson 4x4 club, or maybe I can get Katies sorority to come at least then we'd have some eye candy, and beer pong after the build.

And Rudy you're talkin about everyone takin a day off of work to do this. I'd rather do volunteer work on the weekend and save my days for my vacation.

Not necessarily, we could schedule it around some sort of long weekend like labor day or something. That way tight bastards like you cant make excuses.

when I was googling this morning I read several articles where the building process spand a couple of months, instead of the week at clemson.......... so it could be a long term community project.... you know we would get some good media coverage from this

no I'm not a tight ass but if you think you can frame a house and dry it in and have it ready to move in 3 days I think you're smokin crack. It's hard to do that with a professional crew of framers, you get a bunch of us do it yourselfers out there, aint no tellin how long it would take, longer than 3 days. Clemson is able to build a house in a week cause they have 18,000 students to come volunteer for 5days 24 hours. I don't know how many we have in the club but I would say 15 would show up at anyone time and it aint gonna be 24hrs a day, it'll be every few weekends. Habitat I would think would have a list of upcoming houses to construct. If there's any upcomin we should jump on that. I think it's a good idea but you are talkin a few months of workin on the weekends if we were to try and do this as a club on our own. I think if we want to do this then we should find one already scheduled and go help volunteer building that house. Ask yourself if we were to do this as a club, alone, would you be willin to be out there every day of every weekend till it was done. If you're answer is no then we shouldn't tackle it and we should join a house already scheduled and like make one weekend the Upstate Cruiser weekend and we all go out there with our banner, someone contact the media, we all drive our cruisers, and we bust our ass workin that weekend. And we could even do it once in the sping and once in the fall.

Clemson only has 16000 students and do u think any indians or orientals are out there, no not eliminate 99.9 percent of frat and sorority people your down to a couple thousand people. Now eliminate all the ones who just dont give a @&@&@&@& you have maybe 1000 left. They certainly dont all show up and they only work 12 hrs a day. This is possible we built one in VA with my church there were only like 100 people and we did it in under 7 days 6.5 to be more extact. You dont have to be a master carpenter. Just look at mormons and jehovahs witnesses. They show up build a whole damn church starting fri morning and have church in it on sun night. I think a 1000-1200 ft^2 house is within reason. If we coul do it over a couple of months that would be great. We dont have to be there every day for 24 hrs like you are thinking. I think this is a reasonable project for the club maybe not in 1 week unless we get help from other sources but certainly within a couple months.

Virgo I'm coming back fri night so I'll be up for some wrenching sat or sun I'll give you or chuck a hand.

:frown:  i don't think that PC at all........... :flipoff2:

I will be coming into clemson sometime Sat. morning and swinging by the house

Probably not pc but very true.

I'll either be there fri night or sat midday. I cant get any steel til mon so I wont have much to do except get drunk for New Years. So I figure I'll come lend a hand even if its just moral support.

I have been involved in habitat for humanity since I was 8. Everyone's a little right. It can be completely done in a week. Columbia does this thing called a blitz build where they completely build several houses in one week. If UC were to completely sponsor a house all by ourselves, then it would take a few weeks. Usually though, we would just sign up to work on a phases of the house (i.e. just framing, or vinal siding, or just interior work, etc.). That's how it has worked in my experience doing it.

I would come up and help out on this type of project. Built a few homes in an earlier life. I would like to try the "Blitz" method. It would generate more publicity. A few years back, a similar project down here built a home in 24 hours. They had everything pre-fabbed (trusses, cabinets, trim packages, mechanicals, floor coverings, etc., as well as curing additives for the concrete. Sub-contractors were also pre-arranged and scheduled.

The key is to get ALL of the preliminary planning done and in place first. Right Alan?

If we opt to do just a phase of the project, I would highly recommend doing the framing.

I strongly suggest we avoid the foundation, drywall, and roofing. Right Alan?

Tons of tools down here, just waitin' to go back to work....
