Hey All,

Ripped off 2 flares on the Dusy Ershim, that's over here in Cali....have my rear bumper off to pound out a dent, so figured it's a good time to do the spray thing. I am going with a Line-X dealer, that's about all I can find other than do it yourself. Couple of ?? for you who have done this....

-Metal tape ok for plugging the holes in from the flares prior to spraying? This was suggested to me by 4x4 labs

-did you use an existing flare for a map/template, or did you spray a larger area than the current flare covers....

-did the shop do anything to your paint....scuff it, sand it, treat it, prior to spraying...

-what would you do differently, now that you've gone and done it.....

Thanks for any points of view...

i recently got my front end repaired, including the two front flares. everything was removed from the vehicle in the front. i'm pretty sure that they did some scuffiing on the existing paint. they had to order two new rubber "gaskets" for the flares, as the old ones weren't worth a crap. i think that they are twenty something bucks per.

good luck. i hate those freaking flares, especailly the rears with the piddly-ass mounting point for the flap.

ACE10,

I think you are missing the point......Photo_Cruiser is removing his permenantly. I too have thought about it. I wonder if the 100 series fenders and rear quarter panels are the same? Something to think about, I hate those dang things too. Problem with removing them from the 80 is you nolonger have that sticking out protecting the body from rocks flying up off the tires, that is why I would consider swapping in 100 series parts.

Photo_Cruiser,

I would be a little learly about the metal tape... It wouldn't take much of a hit to knock a hole through it in that spot, unless of course your spray liner is thick enough!!!

Photo_cruiser, hopefully some folks that have done this will repost their pics (may have been left behind in old forum). I'd fill in the holes permanently not using tape. yo - if you are worried about rocks, you could get some flexi flares to put on.

Mine are coming off as soon as I can find a decent shop to do the linex - crapex or whateverx.

Luke at 4x4 labs, suggested the metal tape....that's what the guy next to him who sprays uses.

As far as rocks go....if you're running oem wheels without a different backspacing,, I think you're ok. The line x goes up the body a ways, and that is where the rocks are going to hit, as then thhe body curves inward anyhow...I am on 33's and don't ever see beyond 35's and I'll always be on oem wheels.

I don't care about pics, I've seen it, I like it, just was more curious about the best way to go about it....my plastic fllares a trashed...and going in the trash....

How would you fill the holes....bondo stuff??

Body fillers, like bondo, aren't all that strong. If you're gonna fill in the holes with anything besides the metal tape, the best bet would be to fill 'em in with metal.

I've seen an 80 (at 4x4labs) with the line-x'd body/q-panels where they used metal tape. The holes are small enough that I don't think you'll have a problem and if they spray a couple coats, you'll never know the metal tape was ever there.

The advantage to the metal tape is that it'll pretty much disappear once the liner is sprayed on it. If you don't care about bumps, etc. - you could throw a few bolts in the holes and line-x over them.

I would use POR putty or weld in sheetmetal to fill the holes.

Not sure how big the holes are, but I did something similar (removing flares) on a '99 full size Montero/Pajero. I went to Home Depot or Lowes and they had a selection of plugs to use. I found the size I needed and then painted them body color so you couldn't see them from 5 feet or more. This lasted 50,000 miles when I sold the truck. The plugs I chose had flush heads and you'd never see them under a coat of Line-X.

If I recall, the holes are not round, they are elongated to allow for some adjustment, so the bolt/plug idea will not work so well.... I would weld in metal.
