I am looking to purchase a trailer from a different state (PA) i live in NY.

I dont already have a trailer ...so...i have no plates.

Would i be able to get it home with a bill of sale?...or will that get me a ticket.

DMV is doesnt get it.... they say i will need to get it weighed and then taged then i can get plates

has anybody ran into this ...and what did you do?

JC

call your insurance carrier and see if the trailer is covered under your car policy first. If so then I would just drag it home. Odds of getting pulled over are slim and if you have the sales paperwork then you'll likely be fine if you get pulled over.

Borrow a trailer plate from a trailer with matching color.
Chances are you will get stopped if you dont have ANY plate. Even if it is to 'remind' you that your plate fell off

Attaching plates is more of a crime than not having any. I do see your point as it makes it less risky but it also leads to bigger problems if something does happen

My cousin has sold cars off his lot to people in TX and FL who fly up and drive all the way home with no plates. It can be done

if you dont have a plate and a cop does see you your screwed ask your incurance company about some temp plates for the trailer if anything

Completly different than what he is talking about. It totally depends on the states laws.

JohnnyC why dont you register it as home made and grab a plate from the DMV and you would be legal?

I am starting to think the laws in NY are different than MA, so the masshole commentary should be disregarded :flipoff2:

In Maine you're better off driving with no plate than getting caught with a fictitious plate.

Same is true here in MA....perhaps the Republic of Cape Cod has different rules that apply to Mr Wildman.

In RI they just get you to pay $15 for a temp plate. You have to sit at the DMV for 3 hours to get it and its good for 11 days.

X2. Most states will provide temp plates to non-residents purchasing a vehicle in their state.

the problem is that it has no tags and they need a tag to issue plates....if i go with homemade which i will be doing when i get it home ....i need to have it certified weight at a weigh station...and then i can get a tag and plates....but...need to get it in nys to have it weighed at a cert weigh station...they are such a pain :)

I will ask about temp plates...i was trying to ask that of the dmv gal...but...i probably was taking to the dmv person who really doesnt care about helping....theyre just there for the paycheck :)

Hi Guys,
For what it's worth- I bought a new trailer (enclosed tandem) in KY. Filled it with my schtuff and a new Harley, towed it to California- worked there for four months then filled it back up with all of my schtuff towed it back to CT over about 6 days. No TAG. and no issues- even got pulled over in KS for no other reason than the cops wanted to 'look in the trailer'... the brand new black F250 with matching trailer must have made them think I was planning on running corn or something- holy cornfields batman. :hillbilly:

My advice: pick it up and drive it back- no questions. Good to check with insurance first- although i didn't... didn't 'know you all then to ask. ;)

Good luck Johnny.

Jamie.

I have registered trailers in MA before. If you have a bill of sale and the insurance binder, you go to the RMV and they give you a plate. If you call your agent and give them the info on the trailer, they send you the binder. In my case there was no charge for the trailer insurance.

It doesn't make sense that you can't register it with basic paperwork. I would try again.

well went 221 miles with the trailer in tow...past 14 cop cars at various points...no one pulled me over

thanks Lord for listening while i was driving :)

and at the end of the month...their buissy time.

on the way there 2am-7am i saw 5 cars pulled over...way back i saw 1/2 or the cops with somebody pulled over.

pics of the trailer...nice stout thing...heavy steel.

JohnnyC, where do you live in the Albany area? There are a couple of us around there. You should come out to beers with us some night.
