Hello

I thought i would start a thread with general paint restoration tips and questions...

First question...

When you totally disassemble a vehicle, paint it and reassemble it...
How do you go about painting the screw/bolt heads the body color?
I know almost all of the bolt heads where painted on my 40 originally.
I am just wondering how you guys recommend going about that?

Getting the paint color in an aerosol and spray the bolt heads before hand?

The bolts I am referring too are like the ones on the hinge of the windscreen below:

Only because it would be cool, I would have a painted flat stock sent to a powder manufacture and then have all the windshield bolts done.

But again the "Correct" way is stupid.

1. Have every piece that gets body color stripped by heat and then walnut media to clean up.
2. All metal work would have to be completed (not much on yours) then all pieces dipped in zinc or galvanized.
3. Then self etching primer dip every piece and allow to cure (bake)
4. Fully assembly (without FST) and paint it on a rolling chassis cart. the cowl would have the hood hinges installed and you would have to air brush the hood side after install.

The front bib and fenders are not painted together AFAIK as the motor is dropped in after paint.

the primer would have to be tinted body color as under the dash is never completely painted, and spraying the inside with U-POL is the only way I would go even if it was a 100k truck. That stuff I used on my '81 I did was the s***!

If not, just re plate them all or buy new. It looks good both ways.

Thanks Shane :)

Maybe just powder coating all the bolts would be the easiest :D

I am gonna disassemble the whole vehicle, and the paint shop is going to media blast, repair any dents, prime and paint :D

Then I get to put the whole thing together again hehe :)

Call Tony at Portland Media blasting on 82nd, he is the best walnut guy out there.

Powder the w/s ones as they are a #3 phillips and should not be marred when a tool is used, but hex heads would be.

would the powder coat stay on when putting a tool on them to tighten them down? I am looking at the same issue. I want to paint all pieces taken apart so I know all sides are painted. My plan was to paint then assemble it. Then make some small plastic cones that I can put over the bolt, nut or screw and hit it with the touch up gun. The cone will stop the over spray and the cone will put the paint edge real close to the bolt head etc.

I do not have the budget to send my nuts and bolts out to have them powder coated, but I do want them the same color as the body when done and protected from the excessive salt spray my vehicle will be exposed to.

Just paint over the bolts when you paint the rig. The factory didnt paint bolts seperately. And dont listen to Shane, he's crazy as a J-Bird...

Or leave them in stainless or yellow zinc. I think its a nice look.

Hey Crazy geek:flipoff2:

On his model (year) they did paint the w/s hinge bolts, door hinge bolts and spare.....

ps, you around this weekend? I have stuff for you....

I will be working on two projects you might want to see. '67 corona that gets a new set of tires and OE powder coated wheels.

And a sweet little old school 15' bass boat that getting all new guts.

The only way to paint them it to fully assemble the rig and paint it whole like the factory did. Visualize painting a OE bolt with a captive lock and flat washer. you have paint on all sides of the washers and bolt face. not good.

But again I should put down the pipe. Or that the s***ty cheap ass way out and use ugly ass stainless hardware cause some people think it makes it go faster like chrome......please..

SO you mean to tell me that the factory painted the ws and door and spare bolts seperatly? then attached them? hrmmm....

I am around this weekend. I can come and see you sunday...???:steer:
