OK. I wanted an SR5 console to go in my 85 4Runner so I bought a grey one off ebay a year or so ago with the intention of spraying it brown. I know that it came out of a 4Runner but I don't remember what year. In the meantime, thanks to GRM, I acquired a brown one from an 86 mini truck. The only issue with the one from the mini is I needed to change the large black storage holder out for mine which is smaller but has the switches. My brother-in-law was kind enough to do the swap and we had discussed putting the grey one back on ebay to sell.

Well, now I don't know what year(s) the grey one will fit. It clearly won't fit in an 85 5 speed as the trim in front is too long. Are the consoles different between the auto and manual or did the console change at some point and, if so, when?

....I really need to start that Gen1 interior, all singing, all dancing thread!

Howdy! All I can tell you is that the one in the middle will also fit an 85 X-cab pickup with a 5 speed. Mine is NOT an SR5 model. John

I think that's what it came out of actually.

I really just need to know what year/model the grey one will fit.

OK I found a second Gen 4Runner console online and it looks very different so the grey console has to fit '89 or earlier 4Runners. Since they changed the 4Runner dash in '87 it occurs to me that they might have tweaked the trim on the center console as well?

It's also going to depend on which trans/xfer the truck was built with, G vs. W vs. R. The shifters move around a bit and the consoles had to change to match. The center unit looks like the one in my G'd '84 Xcab, only it has the top piece of the one on the right.

I'd be interested in the center unit if you're going to sell it off.

Let's be clear, the center one is the only one that came out of a truck. The one on the right came out of an 85 4Runner. The grey one on the left came out of a 198? 4Runner.

I have swapped the storage/switch holder on the two brown ones and the center one is now installed in my 85 4Runner (1st photo). The top cover is at the upholstery shop. Sorry it's not for sale.

The Deluxe console on the right which now has the "no switch/larger storage" thingy is for sale if you want it (2nd photo). It's in perfect working order but the top is faded.

I THINK the longer one is for forward shift transfer cases, such as carb'd 4cyl or a r150 v6 truck.

Console looks good in your truck!

Thanks. It took two tries but I got someone to make a leather cover that matches perfectly. I'll post a pic when the top gets put back on.

Cool Deal. I'd like to see how yours turns out.

I am quite happy with my replacement:

the grey one on the left looks exactly like mine non-SR5 85 4runner with 22re/automatic........mine brown though and the lid broke off:whoops:

I wonder how many different configs of these things they made?

Send it to me and I'll let you know if it fits my '88 runner :D

I'm jealous . . . which model Tuffy is that? I still need to find a good place for my 2M Yaesu . . . .

Ya, I wanna know what Tuffy model that is too. How much fun was it to mount? I'm gonna have to do some serious center console mods when I swap in the R151F. And I also need a place to put the 2M rig.

Well based on this photo, maybe the gray one came out of a truck?? I wrongly assumed that it came out of a 4Runner because it had the 3 switch slots. I don't know much about the Gen1 trucks (or any of the others for that matter) having only owned Gen1 4Runners (2 total).

When I look at a side photo of the gray one and the one in this photo, they look like the same console. Can you give me a measurement from the front of the trim (or center of the screw hole) to the back of the console along the bottom?

Maybe the consoles with the longer bottom trim came in 2WD trucks? That would make some sense since there isn't a tranfer case shifter taking up room.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

The biggest hurdle with the tuffy console, was that the rear transfer case shifter (I have duals) comes up right where the stereo is.

Believe it or not, I have the 8" wide console. I drilled 2 holes in the bottom, and used factory hardware to secure it to the factory location. I also had to take the plastic off the side of the seats.

Mind you, its REALLY tight. The seats, and seat belts rub it quite bad, but it does fit.

The 6.5" wide one fits much better.

Some length dims for the 2WD RET's console:

Thanks! The grey one is the same length.

So, if the longer one (grey) is for 2WD Gen1 trucks, is that years 1984 to 1988 or something different?

I must admit that I don't know anything about the 2WD trucks. I was pretty sure that the Gen1 trucks changed quite a bit in 1988 and the 4Runners followed suit in 1989 but I don't know how far back they go.

I have found a part number on the base which is: 58901-8901. Also the part number stamped on the black storage tray/switch holder is 58825-89107. These numbers show up on the online Toyota parts database but it's very difficult for me to decipher exactly which models they fit in (especially since the database doesn't have 2WD vs 4WD as a filter and I don't know the frame codes for one vs the other). It looks like it could fit in manuals or automatics between 1984 and 1988 with extended cabs so maybe it isn't a 2WD console but an extended cab console?

Maybe I'll just throw it over in the classified section for sale and see what kind of commentary I get!

Here's a pic of the center console from an '88 SR5 4Runner (4x4, 5spd).
This console houses the rear heater core and blower for "rear seat passenger comfort".
I would think the left grey one in the original thread pic would fit, but maybe not with the rear heater bits installed.

I've now verified that the shorter brown SR5 console (center in first pic) came out an 86 extended cab 4WD. That leads me to conclude that the longer consoles (gray one in first pic) came in the Gen1 2WD pickups.

i think it is out of 84 looks like mine before i put 87 trans in my 84 so i had to put an 87 console in because the transfer shifter is farther back also had to cut the floor out
