gear sets in 92 4runner

can you guys help me solve and argument, last night at the bar this guy tried to tell me that his 92 4 runner came stock with 4.88's in the differential and i didnt think that was even an option am i right or is it true you could get 4.88's in a stock runner

They were an option starting in 92 or 93 I think, for the 31 inch tire option with an auto trans......

Yes, it's possible, and if he has 31" tires and an auto tranny, then he will have 4.88 gears. Check the axle code on the firewall.

Not a really desirable diff, though. No aftermarket gears available for it, and the factory gears are odd, don't fit in a normal diff.

I believe that 22re/auto combinations came with 4.30 gears. The 4.88's were only available with the 31" tire package.
