Reading all of the post about water hose replacement, including the PHH it seem to be that Gates Green Stripe hose is the way to go.
I'm just having problems finding it in 5/8ths. Napa and other local name brand auto parts stores don't carry it.
This is the size needed to replace the PHH and other firewall hoses right? I went as far as calling Mr. Gates himself at the corporate office here in Denver and he says that the Green Stripe II is not available in 5/8ths?
So what is everyone really using?
Can I get a part # or a tip as how to order the right size Green Stripe.

Thanks,

If thats the case then they have stopped making it in the last 2 months. Call NAPA again, tell them you need 5/8ths inside diameter heater hose. Or you can go to the local hardware store and get about 4 - 5 feet of whatever they've got. Just as long as its 5/8" inside diameter heater hose. Don't forget to get two new clamps.

You should just buy the OEM kit from me. $128.89 for the late model 80 and $158.43 for the early model.

why Green Stripe?
It resist the effects of electrochemical degradation better than standard water hose and also has a higher burst strength over standard hose. So in theory it will last longer and relieve us of worrying too much about our PHH bowing out.
Now I know that Gates make a hose for Napa called Fleet Flex and it has the the same specs as the infamous Green Stripe.

Who are you? Your not on my Denver radar?

O'reillys can order a roll. You can just have them cut what you want to length.

The NAPA Gold strip is a black and gold strip hose made by Gate and is an exact replacement for Gates green stripe. 5/8" Id heater hose. I researched this as well when I was doing my phh. Don't forget this is a great time to replace all of your other coolant hoses and do a great flush. Possibly the thermostat and the water pump as well. Since the coolant is drained. I also recommend bypassing the tube up the back and going around the brake booster, it was A LOT easier to do this route and you end up with extra hose if you need some later.

Fleet flex might be made by Gates. I usually ask who is making there house brand stuff because it sure isn't NAPA. Oh, and just for reference I don't think mine actually says gates on it, can't remember. Oh, and the green stripe is actually gray, weird.

When I got 5/8" hose, I compared the differences in the specifications between Gates Green Stripe and Napa FleetFlex, and found there were none. That's what I ended up using for my non-formed heater hoses, would have done a PHH bypass with it, but already had the blue hose kit.

I asked for green stripe at my local Oreilly and they said they didn't have it. Searched online, checked the stock on their website and went back to the same store and asked for Gates part number 28441 and they found it right away.

I checked with 3 O'reilly's here in Denver and they can not find part # 28441 in there inventory.

Could the 5/8th Green Stripe be a thing of the past?

Old thread but:

Part # 28441 is the 600" (inch) roll part number. If they don't have that they may have it listed under # 28447 which is the 300' (feet) roll part number.

I initially ran into the same issue trying to find 1/2" Gates Green Stripe Heater Hose for the rear heater pipes. None of half a dozen stores knew it existed so drove to one and together we found it available in 25' rolls. Most stores had the Gates Safety Stripe in stock which has the word "Premium" stamped on it with a white stripe down the length of the hose. But don't be fooled, the Safety (white) Stripe is actually the cheapo grade hose at around $1.50 a foot. Green Stripe sells for almost double that per foot. FWIW.

Anyone else having a hard time tracking down Gates green stripe heater hose? An O'rileys by my house have a 300' roll but they won't cut it, they only sell it by the roll.
Also looking for part numbers for the molded heater hoses if someone can help.

Sounds like the beginnings of a gates green stripe retailing business to me.
