I have a 96 and I am only getting 14.5 mpg on the highway, What does evryone else get & how can I improve mine? Any tips or preformance advive will be much needed! Thanks

I drove across country recently. The best I got was about 18 mpg. It was almost 330 miles on the tank (All FWY miles). The worst was around 12 (we hit a lot of wind & rain).

I think fuel quality is different in different states. We had decent mileage from Pennsylvania to South Dakota. When I got 18, I filled up in Indiana (I think). CA seems to really suck. I average about 13.5

There are mnany threads on this. Click Search on the top mast head and select the advanced tab.

Make sure the 80's section is highlighted and type MPG in the keyword and you will get tons of posts to read on the subject.

It is better to teach someone how to grow wheat than give them a loaf a bread. Go grow your wheat my friend and come back if you still have questions.

Tuneups, fuel injector cleaning, etc all make a difference. How much weight is on your rig, etc.

Oh by the way, welcome to Mud.

Learning how to use search and reading the FAQ (stickey thread at the top) are very powerful tools and resources that will carry you a long way.

Wheat = Beer

Teach him how to turn that wheat into beer instead of bread and you'll make him forget that he doesn't have any bread.

how do you even know what kind of gas milage you are getting if you don't know the size of the FZJ80 tank? :whoops:

Umm...

You may have been joking, but what the hey...

Step 1. Fill tank with gas.
Step 2. Push the trip odometer button to reset it.
Step 3. Drive about 200 miles or until you want to get gas.
Step 4. Fill tank with gas.
Step 5. Read the numbers off the trip odometer (miles).
Step 6. Read the numbers off the gas pump (gallons).
Step 7. Divide the trip odometer reading (miles) by the gas pump reading (gallons). = X MPG

The result will be somewhere between 8 (your truck is big, bad or you've been playing bad) and 20 (you had an 80 mph tail wind and were drafting a semi down a mountain).

I get about 12 give or take.

When you fill your tank to reset your odometer.

The next time you fill your tank you take the miles on your odometer and divide it by the amount of gas you just put into the tank.

The odometer (and speedometer) will be off if you are running bigger tires than stock. For me, I am running 285's which are approx 6% bigger than stock.

So in my case I take the mileage on the dometer x 1.06 and divide that by the amount of gas I just put in the tank.

16 to 16.5 mpg on my commute to work.

Since I haven't gone wheeling in it yet I can only reply to these silly threads. ;p

6,000lbs+ trucks shaped like a brick with full time 4WD and 4.5 liter engines simply don't get good mileage.

100% stock driving like Ms. Daisy mainly highway I got 16.1mpg with some uphill/downhill driving.

I added 285/75/16's (33's) and now get 14.5mpg driving pretty mellow on my way to work. All dino fluids in the engine/trans/TC/diffs. 90% highway going 70mph (indicated) which is about 74mph. Not good... but I'm sure it'll get worse with a 2.5" lift.

I average about 15 MPG on the highway, and about 14-15 MPG in town. I removed my front driveshaft for my trip out to Colorado hoping to see ANY gain in MPG and did not observe any gas mileage increase.

I did end up getting roughly 16 MPG on the way back to KC from Denver.

Since BBoyd has a 1996 model, would an OBDII port scanner display the near real time mileage?

Mine doesn't, but maybe the $3000 Toyota tool would

Wife's Red '96 on a trip to KC and back over the last 3 days. 16.4 MPG on 92 octane premium. 300 miles on a tank of gas was a bit diconcerting actually.

My Grey '96 on a trip to Valentine and back last week. 14.1 MPG on 91 octane ethanol blend. 110 degrees out and truck loaded with gear & beer for two guys for 5 days. There on one tank, back on another.

mine gets about 15 - 18 depending.. I have been keeping a close eye.....

Highway, no traffic 18 or so... city and highway 15....
normally average between.
Wierd thing is that Rick B. was suprised I have a 20+ gallon tank.... dont all of them?
I am sure of the tank size ..... empty with light on takes 20.79 gallons......

I agree, I have filled over 20+ gallons in my 96 also. Unless the fuel pumps are ripping us off. I got 16mpg stock and about 10mpg after a 6" lift and 37" tires

I am curently auto-touring the U.S. beginning in St. Louis so as to pick up Rt.66 all the way to Flagstaff, AZ. Doubled back to drop in on SLEE in CO and got outfited w/ 2.5 Heavy, Bull bumper, sliders etc. Currently I am in MT on the way to Glacier National Park. I have logged over 6k miles on 285 Revos and have gotten anywhere from 17.2 to 13.6 along the way. Always use 85 or 87octane depending on whats available. My Crusher has 115k on the clock. Since outfitted @ SLEE my mileage has been 14-15mpg hwy.< a/c on most of trip / 70mph>:grinpimp:

mpg

cruisers are for crawling not tree huggin. I hit 18.5 mpg right after chaging the exhast system from the cat-back to a custom 2.5" free flow cat and muffler. I have 285/75's, 6 people and gear but most importantly it was about 38 degrees F and all freeway miles. I normaly get 13-15 mpg mixed driving.
