Howdy guys,

I searched for a thread for this; didn't find anything.

My FZJ-80 good gas shocks are ready for replacement (probably OEM). Anyone got part numbers or sources to order aftermarket gas shocks to replace like for like so my hood stays up without using a cardboard box to hold it up?

Cheers,
Rob

recommend OEM for struts for sure, have tried the "lift struts depot" or whatever it's called a few times on various vehicles. disappointed each time. personal rig has new OEM gas struts and the above mentioned hood rod as backup.

i just purchased these from Amazon

Easy 5-10 min install. It’s helpful to have an extra person so they can hold the hood/rear hatch as you change out a strut. I learned the hard way and had my head smacked by the hatch; one strut won’t keep it up lol. For $50~ it’s not a bad deal considering the price on the OEM ones. But some folks are OEM or nothing. Either way it’s a flex showing other LC buddies that my hood/hatch can actually stay up 😎

Amazon, hood and rear hatch came as a kit. Been going strong for 6 years.

The hood rod kit is the safest. Read somewhere about a chap who had the hood slam down on their hands due to high wind breaking his hand. Not sure how accurate it is, however don't want to test it. If nothing else, keep a pair of vise grips in the vehicle to clamp the rod in place. Works for the back hatch as well.

Yeah, one cold morning my hood fell on my right/dominant hand and caught my index and ring finger at the first knuckle. I was trapped and in a lot of pain. My wife rescued me (I was screaming like a six year old), no permanent damage to my hand. I use a hood rod now. That Hudd Expo link has the part numbers, but the rod mentioned there was NLA per my local dealership. I got the recommended alternate part and had to spend about ten minutes massaging the rod to get it to work. Not a big deal, just a little bending. I think it's an upgrade, but that's subjective.
