I have been working on repainting my 1997 FZJ80 as the clear was gone on the fender flares and I had some other minor problems with on the vehicle. I was planning on going back with the factory paint color "moonglow siilver metalic" but then I thought about adding something a littel extra to sort of set it apart. Something like just adding a pearl to the clear coat or something just to give the factory color a little more custom look. I will try and post some pics showing the vehicle just before applying the first primer surfacer. My wife suggested that I do something like a two tone, darker perhaps on the bottom section, sort of like some of the SE versions I have seen. Does anyone have some suggestions as to what I might consider before we actually have the paint mixed?

Pics of my 80 earlier

Here are some pictures taken a couple of days ago showing the factory paint and the complete restoration of interior. I am replacing the carpets, recovering the headliner, recovering the front seats in calf skin leather and various other items. This has been one of those jobs that just keeps getting bigger. I just figure that if I am going to take it on, then I better do it all and do it right. I have foung alot of hidden signs of rust beneath mouldings and in other areas that I would otherwise not have found until the the damage is already done. One thing that I found was on the back hatch, the factory wind deflector at its mounting point, the nutserts had caused rust to actually eat through the metal which was hidden beneath the mounting bracket. I also found rust in the bottom of the back glass seam, under the window seal and I figured that it was caused by the areabove at the wind deflector.
I had a Tradesman full length roof rack with mesh floor installed but that thing makes rust in itself. It also weighs so much that I could actually feel the difference in handling performance when it was removed. I have the 2" OME heavy duty springs with Nitros but the body roll was still there with the rack installed. I probably will not install it again but will be looking to get one of the all aluminum racks produced which won't rust, weighs probably half as much and has less wind drag.

I always liked the oem silver w the red trim around the bottom........

but it ain't about what I like...............

The pearl may be a lil 2 fast & 2 furious for my tastes....

white 80s always look good

prob stick with oem color unless you are planning painting the jambs and under the bonnet.

The jams are going to be sprayed but I still do plan on going back with the OEM color. I was just thinking about doing something with the OEM color to give it something just a little more custom. I do not want to change the color to something far from the orig color. wonder what two tone possibilities I might explore? And I am not planning on shooting the color and clear coat outside in the driveway. I have built a custom paint booth 30' x 16'. I have already finished the fender flares with the mixed to code color and they look great. That is another reason that I decided to just do the whole thing because the new flares looked so much better than the rest of the paint. I will be sure to post updates to completion...if I am ever really finished... I love my Cruiser 80!

I am Preping the 80 as we speak. Just got done rust bulleting the inside of the doors and other odd ends ( rain gutters, tail gate, hatch etc, etc..) I am going to pick up the paint in about two weeks for it. A non-metalic brown, much like the 60 series but with out the metalic look. I know most hate brown but I think its gonnnaaa look sweet. It might almost make the 80 series look a little more classic...

Nice job on the masking.
That is a ton of work you have taken on.
I agree on a darker color down low.
I would mix up a tone half way from your top color to black.
You tires and armour are black so it provides a nice transition.
Just my .02.

Cool!

Very nice! My rig needs a repainting but i dont have the balls to do it myself and cant afford to spend that kind of $. I want to go from the dark green to the "Moonglow" pearl!

In the movie "Syriana" there were some 80 and 100 series rigs that were painted like a beige"ish" color that looked REALLY nice!

Also, if you are keeping the flares off, what are you using to fill in the holes?

I think a slight pearl would be nice on there and not be too flashy. LOWTIDERIDE, I think that color will be bad a$$ on an 80. Volvo has a burnt choclate/copper looking color they came out with a few years ago. I would love to see that on a Yota.

And good progress on that 80 Imagery. It takes alot of work to do it right and it looks like it is well on its way.

Candy paint maybe in blue, green or red like the Arctic Trucks. I like LC80 body style, so any color will look just as good. Have fun! :)

Very cool. If you are asking for suggestions on color, i mentioned to wagoneer to paint his fzj45 seargant rock color. It is a silver color with a hint of green. Looks perfect for a truck. It was mixed up on the spike TV show called trucks and is offered by PPG paints.

I have seen someone paint an 80 that same pearl white that came on the LX 470 and honestly I dont think it looked very good IMHO. Others might like it but it was way to bling and just didnt fit the rig. Good luck with what ever color you go with.

Stick with OEM original color.

Switch the "J" and the "Z" in your sig line!

Looking very involved...good job!

Nice, I love the Brown 60's and I think it will look great on the 80, and I agree, it will give it a classic look ....... cant wait for the pics.

Brown 80

I like brown/ beige 80's myself. Also looke at the brown 80 in the background with the red accent. Cool.

Nothing to comment on the color, but are you not worried about dust particles and such painting it outside??

Arya- see post #4: "And I am not planning on shooting the color and clear coat outside in the driveway. I have built a custom paint booth 30' x 16'."

Okay, stick with an OEM Toyota color...I like both of those, Henry.
