Hello everyone, I recently purchased a 1997 Locked FZJ80 in great condition. I got incredibly lucky and ended up with an awesome rig.

I've been reading the forums for a couple of weeks now and have begun to create a list of things to take care of before I start worrying about mods.

This is a modified to do list from another member, anyone see anything I should add or not worry about?

Oil change (Mobil 1 synthetic) & filter (OEM)
PHH
Coolant flush, (Toyota Red)
Radiator Hoses?
Thermostat & gasket (OEM)
Fuel filter (OEM)
PCV valve (Napa)
Distributor cap, rotor, dust gasket (OEM)
Spark plugs (OEM Denso)
Spark plug wires (OEM)
Throttle body cleaned, new gasket
Intake manifold cleaned, new gaskets
EGR valve cleaned, new gasket
Fuel injectors?
Greased U-joints & driveshafts (Green Grease)
Greased knuckles (Valvoline Palladium moly #2)
Front Diff fluid change (Valvoline 75W-90)
Read Diff fluid change (Valvoline 75W-90)
Transfer case fluid (Valvoline Synthetic 75W-90)
New fluid in fan clutch, 15K CST, 60mL
New charcoal canister (Auto Zone: VC-120)
Suspension Bushings.. etc

Bleed the brakes and the power steering fluid system to ensure clean fluid throughout both systems. Install a new $15 EFI relay, keep the used one on board as a spare.
Sweet rig! I love that color combo. Miles, price, location, if you don't mind sharing?

Thanks, the truck has 106,000 and looks like it was garaged for the entirety of its life. Its almost too clean. Although gauging from the oil change sticker that has Mobil 1 listed as the last oil used, I'm hoping it was well maintained too. Got it in the Boone, NC area for what I consider a steal at 8k. Planning on keeping this one until I ride off into the sunset.

Front Axles Rebuilt?
Other than that you were comprehensive.
Now is a good time to change out speakers to Pioneer (add head unit) and Switch over to LED, maybe wrap wheel with Wheelskinz, get rubber floor mats???
Just what I would do if I recieved a mint rig.

Congrats on you Cruiser, very nice looking.

Looks like a really clean rig! I would suggest a few things on your list would be only if required, rather than part of baselining a rig:

-Intake manifold cleaned, new gaskets
-New charcoal canister (Auto Zone: VC-120)
-Suspension Bushings.. etc

Add in brake flush and PS fluid flush (ATF on these trucks), change the trans fluid (via a series of drain and fills, or a full flush under the trans pump's own power, no power flushes!), front axle rebuild, and that should be pretty comprehensive.

I doubt that the front axles were rebuilt so I'm sure that will add to my list, as well as the brake fluid and PS flush. I've already got some LED interior lights on the way to try and I've added the pioneers to my wishlist on Amazon. :)

Also going to get the FSM here shortly as well.

I took out the LC on a loose gravel road to make sure the lockers worked over the weekend and MAN! those things are serious.

Thanks for all the replys

you lucky SOB. I've been looking for months and I can't seem to find the one that fits my fancy. Now I know if because YOU FOUND IT! lol, congrats man, nice truck

Hehehe, thanks. They're still out there, keep your eyes peeled. This particular one wasn't listed anywhere, just happened to be owned by an older dude who didn't have much concern with it's resale value. He actually told me he was originally selling it for FAR LESS than 8, but he happened to get on the internet the night before I showed up and "substantially" raised the price.

I can only imagine what his original sale price was.

I just did my front wheel bearing repack, and new trail gear steering stabilizer kit, along with new front rotors and pads. (StopTech and OEM Toyota Pads) Prior to that I did my plugs, wires, cap and rotor and front diff flush and refill. I have only owned mine 7 weeks so far buts its pretty awesome. On the list for me is: Rear Diff, Xfer case and Tranny refill, new fuel filter. I only got 2 out of 3 radiator hoses so my coolant flush/thermostat will have to wait a few weeks. Congrats on the purchase.

pretty comprehensive list. as mentioned, I would do your axles 80 Series, Terrain Tamer Knuckle Overhaul Kits

I would NOT do your injectors unless needed. you have to remove your plenum, which is a labor of love, either by you or your mechanic. I had an injector go bad and needed to replace one. While off, I had the other 5 cleaned/tested as it made sense. But I would not recommend this as PM.

Clean your intake as stated, that's easy and a 4 bolt job. change all fluids. otherwise, drive and enjoy.

I don't think I could live with myself if I was worrying about mods. Giving them thought, sure, but worrying is some next level s***. Are you sure it needs half of that crap? Maybe drive it for a while, enjoy it, and see what it needs, but my guess is not much of it.

I don't think I will ever understand why so many people here want the front axle rebuilt. Do the terrorists win if we don't rebuild our front axles?

My birfields are covered in gunk. Apparently my felt sweepers are shot so I'm slowly seeping moly lube. Thats the only reason I would rebuild is to get that nasty grime out from under my front axle. I constantly have to throw away shirts when I go under there :)

subscribed. Picked up a 96 with 172k miles , factory triple locked , completely stock.

Previous owner replaced radiator and all hoses including PHH
upgraded starter

has a small power steering pump leak and less than 1/4 quart of oil to be added between oil changes.

So I've been driving the LC around a little bit daily before I dig into it. The oil was recently changed with Mobil 1 so I'm good there.

However, I'm noticing a little bit of valve train noise. Its a constant low volume ticking that I suspect is from the camshafts. This is normal in my other car, is this normal for the 80 series land cruisers?

I also installed the LED interior lights.. and wow.. they are bright.

Usually when there is grease leaking out it is not from worn felt. It is because the inner seal is shot and diff oil is leaking into birf. This thins out the grease cousing it to leak out past the seals and not lubing the birf joint as it should. So the leaking grease is often a sign of worn seal seperating the birf grease and diff oil. Or any that is how I understand it.
