Hi guys,

I am looking to choose a single pick up cabin for a project in the future, to possibly install over a 80 series chassis.,

And I am searching for the best in terms of weight and functionality.
I checked the weight of the fzj75 and looks to be 1833Kg, the fzj79 weighs 2045.
Does anyone know the reason for the 79 being 200Kg more than the 75?

I also see some builders in USA picking the cab from the 2008+ model. Do you know the reason for that choice? is it for the purpose to pick the most recent/new cabin?

thanks in advance

The 79 is a bigger cabin than the 75. Therefore safe to assume it would be heavier. Look at both of them from the side, it should be obvious.

You are comparing weights of vehicles with different cabins, different chassis, different driveline, etc. Therefore only some of the weight difference may be accounted for in the cabin.

Hello,

The 79 Series cab is preferred because it is available from sources in the Middle East and elsewhere, most notably companies that convert 79 Series trucks into armored vehicles. 75 Series cabs are becoming scarce, as they were discontinued by 1999.

The 79 Series cab is a little longer than the 75 Series. This is the reason why it is heavier.

You can get it with two or four doors.

There are a few threads about 79 Series on 80 Series frames. Ian / @SNLC and Galen / @bottombracket come to mind. The search function is your friend.

Thanks guys, i just find 200kg just for a few extra inches in the cab, a bit excessive...
Engine should be pretty much the same, other differences are the coils in the front, gearbox on the 79, being lighweight, should be lighter.

But yeah, in any case, it might make more sense, possibly for almost the same price, to get a brand new 79 cab to do a whole swap project.

Another question is, I have several options for engine swaps, what would be your favorite choice if I want to run 37" tires ?

I would prefer to have an auto gearbox and the lightest possible motor for Rockcrawling . I know nothing about how compatible they are with the 80 drivetrain though .

- the 80 comes stock with the 1fz, i could just leave it there.
- 1fz fe
- 3uz fe v8. This might be my favorite, 300lbs torque, lighter, aluminum. Less sturdy though, but i also want to keep the whole truck as light as possible so i don't overload the engine .
- 2uz v8 from the 100 series
- 1hdt diesel
- 1hdt fe diesel

The purpose would be to only drive it in north America, overland/rocrawling trips.

Thanks in advance

I run a 79 body (2020) on an 80 chassis with 35’s. It has a 2uz from a Tundra and a343 auto from a 100 series. Runs and drives great since I completed the build about 3 years ago.

I absolutely love my 2006 lx470 v8 5 speed auto.
I would feel pretty confident in running that setup, plenty of power and low down torque to run 35s and 37s. With the 2006 model gear.

Can the 80 series axles handle the 37" tires with the 2uz though? .

I got a lead on a hzj80 with the 1hz engine, we are not sure about the two kilometers, but it could have 50 to 100kms with a mint frame and very good mechanicals.

I know the 1hz is a dog, but i wonder if it's a really good option for Rockcrawling.

This would be a build when 37" tires, and i may install reduction gears for low gearing on the transfer case

1HZ works great for crawling , I had both a 1HDT and a 1HZ in my 73 crawler and on the rocks there isn't much difference between the two . If you want to run highway speeds on 37's I suggest putting at least a turbo on the 1HZ .

Yeah. I will look into that.

There's some guys using the 1hdtfte turbo on the 1hz with some success.

The 1hdfte turbo is just a CT26 and it is a great size for quick response. You will max out around 17-18 PSI with an intercooler, 19-20 PSI without. But that is plenty for a 1HZ motor. It sure wakes it up and makes it more drivable, especially where I live in the mountains. I run 35's and I have no problem keeping up with traffic.
