Technically speaking I suspect the frame number counts here as well. I own both donor vehicles so if there's a problem at least I'll have the option of correcting the registration. It could ultimately be problematic if I do because in the US airbags became mandatory in 95.

ChuckB - if you're registering in CA you should do some research first. It may be best to start with a donor that is a 93-94 if you need to register it as the 80.

Noted.

Also, just in case it wasn't clear, ideally if I went down this road I would like it registered pre-'76 to avoid emissions if possible. In my dreams, a diesel would be nice in there, but I could live with the 1FZ ;)

Here we've got the body off the frame and are welding in nutserts for trans tunnel, floor supports, etc. After this we took the body over to the paint shop to have the cowl blasted down to bare metal, finish body work, seam seal and paint.

Lance

Do you guys do your own body and paint work in house?

For me it was a must to learn everything as I had a hard time finding paint shops to do the work.

Cam made me do it...

(it's pewter to match dash components... pictures just don't capture how sweet it looks!)

Did I miss what colour the rig is going to be?

That looks great on the cage tho.

Looks good to me!

Nope! Been quiet about it... Just welded in the last patch to the body this morning. It gets final body work this afternoon and should be in primer by tomorrow morning. If all goes as planned I'll have the body in color tomorrow night.

Man....I love this build!!! All these FZJ- builds are so intriguing, only wish I had the time/skills/money and I would have a fleet of them.

We do our own body work but we do sub out the Paint itself

Cam

Ya, I understand the cost of a paint booth plus the space it takes up. I was lucky enough to have rented a shop with an ajoining paint booth at my disposal.

Cannot wait to see this thing in paint..........................

Mike at Showcase Autobody here in Fredericksburg has taken over paint work for Iron Pig. I leaned on him to put color on the FZJ40. EDIT 9-6-10: Had a lot of problems with the paint Mike has done for us - spent a lot of money having his work re-done by others at my own expense. I cannot recommend him. The good news is that he forced me to bring paint work inside the IPOR organization so now we do all of our own paint work and the result has been reduced turn time for customers, greater longevity and reduced cost.

First pic is a close up of the cage in pewter. Next two are the tub getting primer.
