spent too much time looking at my coolant temp sensor gizmo over a long trip towing a trailer and over some serious hills, as well as wheeling and crawling...
Well, despite numerous complaints here to the contrary during the last big cooling paranoia craze (the one before the current HG paranoia craze), I am happy to report that the cooling system on my FZJ appears very well designed and keeps the engine rather cool under demanding conditions.

that is all... :)

Soooooo, the point of your post is you went on a long trip and didn't overheat?

ummm, So the tile of the thread should be E9999's cooling system didn't fail?????

What am I missing?

The stock coolant temp sensor gizmo, or (I'm guessing) some fancy shmancy custom aftermarket coolant temp sensor gizmo?

I'm assuming it's the latter; what kind of temp's were you seeing?

just a thermocouple system I put together.
the majority of the time on flat ground the temp was reading at about 185F or just about where the thermostat is still partially closed or having just fully opened, I think. Meaning with plenty of reserve capacity. Even on long and steep hills with the trailer, never went much more than about 205F or so. Looks pretty good to me. That's with the OEM 97 alum rad, as far as I know.

Ahh, some technical data. That's better!

If you have temps and charted them some how, pls share.

205 or so and its not even summer yet:eek:

Mine runs at about 195F once warmed up, with excursions to low 200's when under load/up hills. That's using the OBDII to observe. IIRC, the thermostat is a 190, so I don't think this is too far off the mark and within reasonable limits for being "normal". Eh?

Standard engineering answer = "depends"

What was the ambient temp? A/C on or off?

My 95 runs around 188-194 in cool weather (<75deg F, no AC). At high ambient temps (95-100) with AC on it runs around 196-205.

Yea really, I never saw 200 either before or after my "HG Paranoia" , which by the way proved to be true!

This is like the kid who races home to show the report card to the parents with "C's" all over it and trying to tell them "C" stands for Cool! If yer runnin 205 now yer gonna flunk the test sooner or later, ooohhh, but dont worry that's just the paranoia talkin!!! Right???

Go flush yer system or take a poll about whether you should flush yer system! Or better yet, go change yer wiper blades!

:D :flipoff2: :D

In 13 years I've never had my temperature needle anywhere other than right in the middle of the range.

That includes mountain roads, desert with AC on, towing a 5000lb boat, rock crawling, etc.

That's cause its completely designed that way with a "dead middle range". For your needle to move any at all things have to be totally heating up, prolly faster than you can really respond to. Search for factory temp guage and you will get a TON, repeat a TON, of info on this.
