We found a full float axle housing at the wreckers in Honduras this weekend but we're not sure if it's a '40, '60 or '70.

We need the dimensions on the axle housing, preferably the backing plate to backing plate dimensions. If I remember right this one is 50 3/4" from backing plate to backing plate.

Also the backing plate appears to mount with more than 4 bolts which makes me think it's a '40 rather than a '60 based on what I've seen.

Also, what parts are interchangeable with the front axle or with a drum front?

The guy says he can get all the parts but I'd like to know if anything interchanges.

My 40 FF is ~49" to the back (inside) surface of the backing plates. The plates are mounted with 4 bolts.

As I understand it, the late model 40 FF axles with parking brakes have 4-bolt mountings, while earlier axles have 8 bolts.

In Aus, this is true.. Although some of the HJ47s from the same years have the handbrake on the split TC and the 8 bolt backing plate housing pattern.. The axle shafts are different though, some have the seals in the spindles and some in the hub bearing locking nut.. All very tricky..

8 bolts. It has the seal in a nut on the hub end.

I'll measure flange to flange for you tomorrow afternoon if you still need.

It would be good to know the flange to flange dimension. Do you know if any of the brake stuff transfers over?

I'll measure this afternoon. The brakes look identical front and rear to me. In fact, I robbed a drum off of the front axle (swapping to discs) for that rear FF. Basically, the wheel bearings and everything interchange, but the oil seal in the rear on mine is inside that nut.

The whole assembly is NOT available from Toyota, but I got the actual oil seal (which just presses into the nut itself) from SOR. I saw a Toyota part number listed for it on here somewhere though.

I measure about 50 3/4" from inside axle flange to inside axle flange.

And all of the brake hardware inside the drum appears to transfer over from my front axle to the rear (I just compared though, didn't actually take stuff apart and bolt it together)
