Make 50 of those filler plates and sell them
We actually talked about it! Once the filler plate was made this was a super easy project and the roof actually welds really well. I left the glass for him to use as a template, it might show up on his website in a month or two. We did knuckle gussets a couple years ago and people seem to like them

This is on the list of things to do before I paint my 80. I can't stand sunroofs. I was going to make my own, but a precision fit laser/plasma cut piece showing up at my doorstep definitely has value.

How thick is the metal?

Shipping knuckle gussets is a lot more feasible than this big plate I'd love to see what it costs to my door

It’s 14 gauge. He told me this morning that if I can get a group buy of 5 people he’d get the material and start cutting them out. They’d be $110 shipped

I know the sunroof cassettes themselves are different between the years, but I wonder if the opening on a 91-92, 93-94, and 95+ are different. Like could the sheet metal for yours fit in my 94? I don't think anyone has ever explored that. I'd jump on board if I knew it would.

Also did you weld in some kind of reinforcement structure under it to replace the sunroof cassette that previously reinforced everything?

Was there a slight curvature rolled into the roof plate?

I didn’t weld a reinforcement in because the sunroof didn’t have any. It seems to be sturdier than before. If you want to walk on the roof I’d weld one in though. I stepped on it and it did oil can down but it popped out once I stepped off

I’m interested to see what you do with the interior side of the hole.

Ok so you won’t be plugging the hole for the sake of aesthetics?

I want to get a jdm nonsunroof headliner eventually and deal with the dumb hole! Or just figure out how to glue the slide in? I haven’t thought that far yet

I was not expecting you to go black, pulled the uno reverse on me. If you don't want to fight blending the white, just make it stand out even more.

Personally if I do this I'm planning to paint the whole roof white. I would like to add some kind of reinforcement in under it mostly because I have a 94 and want to reinstall a bowed headliner and I'm not 100% sure how the bows would work in the front without something there.

Edit: TBF i also haven't taken down my headliner yet to even explore.

I’m leaving for a trip in 2 week and I don’t have the time or skill to make it disappear! I’m curious to see how you solve the problems I’ve been to lazy to fix!

I did take your advice and paint some black wheels silver. Came out surprisingly better than expected. Guess I need to finally get around to starting a build thread and put the last year and a half worth of pictures in it.

Do it! Making a build thread is fun

The hard sides coming together! I have to narrow the outside tubes by about an inch to fit the step plates. I’m a little bummed because I’ll probably get into the doors more but I’m stoked because maybe ill finally fit through middle monkey

The dimple die’d step plates are a nice bit of detail.
