I have a 1977 FJ40. What size is the vent hose in the picture? 9/16 is not available. 5/8 is too big. Half-inch I can get on (with a fight) but it's too small. What do people do to replace this hose?

Nobody carries 9/16 fuel line anymore? I would look around at more vendors. You could also check with BAP for metric. John

BAP is an auto parts store in Arizona correct?

I called 2 NAPAs, Pep Boys, Autozone, O'Reilly - nada.

SOR has one, but then I'd have to order other parts from them to make it worthwhile.

I didn't figure this would turn into a headache.

Used to be scattered all over the country. They had them in Boston when I lived there, and there is one in Colorado Springs, still not very close for you. Check Roc Auto.com and with VW/Buggy shops, too. John

I did some searching and the only thing I could find was this post from Poser many moons ago:

He references a 1/2" line, but maybe the later fuel tank connection is larger? There is no way I can get a 1/2" hose on that fitting far enough to put a hose clamp.

Could be. We just replaced one at the shop recently on a 72. I can check source in the AM. John

since it's only a vent, how important is it that it's a fuel line as opposed to some other kind of line?

Just about anything could work, but for a limited time. It does have fuel vapor in it which causes a lot of plastics and rubbers to get soft. John

When I bought it there was a hole in this line. At the time I replaced it with 5/8" coolant hose I think. Lasted about 5-6 years before it started smelling on fillups. I'd rather do it right this time

The stuff we used was VW cloth covered fuel vent/vacuum hose, IIRC 14mm. Got it at BAP, but any VW parts store should have it?

Okay, I got a tip from a RS'er about this place in Boulder - seems promising, if not cheap.

It's more then a vent line since it's possible when the fuel tank is full for fuel to get pushed up that line during acceleration or off camber type driving. So you definitely want the line to be fuel rated so it's not getting dissolved and sending junk into your tank/carb and/or leaking fuel.

I just installed my tank last week & Advance Auto had 9/16" fuel line for the vent.

I installed 1/2" without any issues. Yes, it was snug going on but not that tight. The photo is the fill and vent for my rear tank.

Turns out this place in Boulder has metric hoses and other metric stuff for european and other vehicles:

14mm was a perfect fit! Thanks again to Jacket for picking it up for me!

Well, the 5/8" worked, just too big. The 19/32" would have also worked and been a closer fit, but still too big:

17/32" - 0.531"
14mm - 0.551"
9/16" - 0.563"
19/32" - 0.594"
5/8" - 0.625"

Thanks for the link though, push comes to shove if I ever have to do this again and can't find an option locally, I'll think of Summit.

Needed a foot of the 14mm (~9/16), but couldn't get it through NAPA. advance, oreilly, etc. Found it on a roll at a local import carparts store.
VW or Continental OEM part # N20371-1 or N203711 for 1 meter. PN for a 5meter roll is N203715.
HTH!
