I have an issue with a fuel tank that I bought from Rock Auto. I think this is a Spectra tank and it looks and fits identical to the OEM. The only difference so far is that there is no drain on the bottom.

My problem is that I had it powder coated and the heat from the oven caused the 3 little vent tubes to get mangled. One is completely broken free and the other 2 seemed to have gotten bent or something.

Anyway the question is, do I need these? The truck is mostly smog free and it seems like I could just plug the holes but I am not sure. It seems like I could as I think the big vent tubes is still good and it would go back to the charcoal canister, I think. But I am not sure.

Any thought or ideas are appreciated.

Thanks

I would get some gas tank epoxy putty and glue it all back together with a nice fat cone. Rough up the surface and clean it with acetone. I still have my 72's vapor stuff hooked up.

So I have to ask? Were those tubes just epoxied (glued) in, they weren’t welded or brazed? Was the original tank similar….glued in?

I’ve had several tanks powder coated, albeit older or aftermarket auxiliary, have never seen this. All had welded fittings.

These are soldered/brazed in.

Thanks for the link @charliemeyer007 .

I got the bad tube out, definitely soldered in and it has a long tube that went to the far side of the tank and was likely soldered to the top of the tank. The oven at the powder coater probably softened everything up just enough that the solder gave way.

I am going to try solder this in once if it doesn't work I will get the tank epoxy.

One of my favorite solder's is low temp silver with the proper flux - Brownells is where I got my last one perhaps 40 years ago.

I had some success. I soldered the tube back in and it is in there pretty tight. However I wasn't able to get "mounding" of solder and it looks like there might be some pin holes.

So I am going to order the jb weld as well. Thanks for the help I will drop some pics as I go.

Thanks for the help.

Soldered tube.
