On the advice of Jim (Cruiser_Nerd) I am going to post up my situation here to see what the masses think:

I am needing a fuel tank and filler neck for my restoration. Jim was kind enough to send me a filler neck for an early FJ40. Problem is, it does not fit. Seems I might have/need an FJ25 filler neck.

Jim also mentioned that the fuel tanks on the early 40s are different than the 25s because of the pass side floor pan by the transfer case. When I look at photos of FJ25s, the pass side floor pan looks identical to mine.

Pics are attached for reference on what my FJ40 has.

Thanks for your help to my never ending questions.

This link has some pics of my junk with a confusing explanation for tanks.

Yes, 25 floorboards and your '61 floorboards are nearly the same.

25 and 40 tanks look the same, but are not....25 tanks are narrower because of the wider 25 trans tunnel cover. So, a 25 tank will fit in a 40, but a 40 tank will not fit in a 25 with the original trans cover...the trans cover is the determining factor, not the floorboard.

25 HT and 25 FST tanks differ in filler necks, 25 HT looks like a 40 except with the wide filler neck, 25 FST is just plain weird.

Your '61 takes a 40 tank because you have the narrower trans cover, but your opening requires a large filler neck. These are on 25HTs and '61 (maybe some '62s) 40s.

Untill you find a the large filler neck make an adapter out of sheet steel or aluminum and use the neck you have;)

Oh yeah, with the large filler neck you need to find a large gas cap, good luck! So maybe stick with the small neck, we'll still talk with you;p

How hard is it to find a 25HT filler neck? Still like to pursue the correct parts.

I'll worry about the gas cap later..............

Thanks for the info. This 61 FJ40 definately keeps me guessing all the time.

:) Phil's the tank expert!

Filler Neck - I believe I sent one to James Valley (cruiserparts.net) with the tank from the '58 FJ25 hardtop. I'm not sure though. This was before I got educated on the 25/40 tanks, and James and I thought it could be used for the early 40. I may have sold the filler neck to Nick (zebrabee) with the body tub. I do know it isn't here anymore though. Filler neck should be much easier to find I'd think because once you lose the gascap you're S.O.L.

Bill, I can send down the filler opening from the '62, you can butcher that in the meantime.

Thanks Nick. I'm thinking that tub had a later 40 filler neck anyhow, because I don't recall having one of those rare 25 hardtop necks in my hands. :)

What is the proper plating color for the filler neck? Cad plated (yellow or silver?)

(Yoda Voice) The Force is strong in this one, but so impatient is He!

I Think they were yellow cad, or at least the one in the pic above is, with layers of green, red, black, white, orange on the top side. Yellow cad on the underneath

While we're thinking of gas caps, thought I'd post this solution to the big cap dilema, from Cruiserman's HT.

Stamped into the face is "Do not loose stupid"

Thank you ObiWan:) i was not sure since I cleaned it up and it did not even have a hint of cad plating on it. Just wanted to be sure.....so i do it correclty.

I plan to make an adapter plate for the small neck filler into the larger neck opening to solve the near term problem.

That right there, made my day. :D (I leave notes like that for myself too.)

Bill, the '62 filler opening will be in the mail, it's not doing me any good.

Yeah, but do you spell the notes correctly??

:D loose=lose and break=brake No reason to fight it anymore. Besides loose caps sink cruisers? :D

Fj 40

I am in the process of restoring a 1962 FJ that some old dude gave me. When he asked me if I wanted it I said YAAAAAAAAAAA ya. Well I"m finding out why he gave it to me bless his heart.

I have done so far: new electronic dist, new plugs, brakes and cylinders all the way around, new steering rods and shock stabilizer. New windshield, all new hoses and wiring. Reupholstered bench in front, carb rebuild, new rims and tires and now my head gasket is blown and the mechanic wants 7 bills to re do the thing. I have 5 grand into so far and I want to put a roll bar fresh paint and then hopefully do some 4 byen.

Any suggestions or comments are appreciated.

Scott Glad you made it to the board......... these guys know their early cruisers.

and just a little more info. on Scotts 62 FJ40 (since I almost bought it from him:D) it is a green FST which from the pictures I saw looks to be very complete and in very nice shape.

Good luck with reviving the old girl

Gooshyboy,

Welcome. Let me know if you are getting rid of any of the old parts from it. You will notice that our early ones share some things with the FJ40 and some with the FJ25. Kind of like whatever was left in the parts bin is what was thrown on.

I am attempting to restore a 1961. Post up pictures of what yours looks like, especially if it is as complete as ClemsonCruiser (my recent parts scrounging competitor:doh:) says.

Well so much for an early FJ40 tank fitting my early FJ40:confused::confused: It is too wide for my floor board. Fits fine front to back, but hits the center bracing side to side. I have it slid all the way over to the door sill.

Does this mean I need a FJ25 gas tank?

Seems as though I require an FJ25 fill neck, why not the tank........................

That is the way they fit, at least on the '61 and '62 in my yard...

Try fitting the trans cover to the body and then put the tank in, maybe even the passenger seat and see how it all fits together. You are fine.
