Shucks... if I hadn't been so stoneaged with my computer in the shop... I could've asked MShelby just to send that fuel sock my way... jk. I need to do this fuel sock changed. Getting windshield leak fixed Friday, then comes deadener and bedliner, so fuel sock swap needs to be in there somewhere... thanks for the thread Jack and CHEERs to women who acted interested when we talk about our rigs... My lady convinces me she enjoys going off-roading with me!!!!

Jack many thanks for taking the time to document this in such detail!

A couple of notes:

You don't need to do Step 7. Once you remove the 17mm fuel line banjo fitting (do this before removing the fuel pump lid bolts), you can easily move that line out of the way.

A 5/16" bolt driver also works well for removing the 8 pump bolts and eliminates the risk of wallowing out the cross on each if they've been there untouched for 15 yrs. :)

What year do you have? The screws on the lid are perfectly round on my 1991. Also I needed to remove the entire fuel assembly from the tank to replace the sock and inspect the rigging, so step 7 was necessary because those fuel lines wouldn't reach very far.

I removed the line from the lid because I wanted to take it into the garage so I could stand up and PM the fuel mechanism. Its not necessary to remove the line in order to replace the sock, but I did for convenience. Works either way.

Its like this sign I saw driving in the country, "Veterinarian/Taxidermist.....Either way you get your dog back!"

What Al and I are saying is if you remove this 17mm-head fitting, you can move the whole line out of the way and - following your disassembly instructions - lift the pump out of the tank.

The other fuel line with the pinch clamp does have to come off.

Either way, it is kind of splitting hairs. ;) I always want to do the job properly, but I'm also lazy. :) Thanks again for the writeup, had I not lost my new sock retaining clip in the grass, this would have been a 20-minute job! (My seats are out too)

Oh I see! DUH! In the picture I drew a line to both lines to be removed but only the banjo bolt of that particular line needs to be removed and then moved to the side. However, the other fuel line on the left does need to be removed IIRC, correct?

Yep that is correct.

I think I have a picture somewhere of where the retaining clip should be. Couldn't really get a picture of it but it might help in your instructions.
 
Ok... One more cruiserJack item off my list. Now to my list...

Did mine yesterday. Not too terribly difficult, though the banjo bolt spewed out tons of fuel which was fun.


Figured I'd take a video of the internals, just to see what they look like. Enjoy. :cheers:

Having trouble getting he hose off that is pictured to top and left of photo. Anyone aware of a "trick" to getting a rubber hose loose from hard line? There is not much room to grab it and I have just about rubbed my fingers raw

Soapy water on the end and worked it around for awhile finally freed up. Just finished. The old sock was pretty crusty.....
 
Guess ill add this to the list that never ends
 
Just did mine today! I have to say the only thing I would say was difficult was taking off and re-installing that darn retainer clip for the sock.
