Hi guys, my '99 LC UZJ 100 177.000 mi smells like urburnt gasoline from from the exhaust both to the ignition and on idle. So, I've already changed fuel pump, fuel filter, injectors, ventilation hoses, spark plugs, fuel pressure regulator , fuel pressure pulsation, 02 sensors , but the smell did not disappear. No DTCs on Techstream. At the end, I checked exhaust gas and I found this values. What do you think about? Have I to change the catalysts?

You replaced an awful lot of stuff...

How hot are you getting the vehicle before checking for the unburnt gas smell? The cats need to get very good and hot on an older vehicle like this to convert. If its at operating temp and still smells like gas, then yes, maybe you have a fouled cat.

I would try to find a local club member with the same vehicle and either get their exhaust gas measurements for comparison, or swap their exhaust on.

My car smells in every conditions, also at operating temperature. UnfortunateIy, in Italy I do not find a local club member with the same vehicle and I cannot do any comparison.

Before replacing cat's do a compression test and leak down- Two samples: one with engine cool and one with engine at operating temps. Record and post back.

Hi guys, at the end I changed both catalysts. But I found a surprise inside them and so I' m showing it you now....

The problem was a smell of unburnt petrol even if any DTCs were stored in Techstream.

Would it be possible that the inside of catalysts was consumed for more 20 years?

I do not know why the previous owner did it.
Kinda weird thing to do on a 100, but there are tons of people that do this in the sports-car-modifying world. Cheap way to unlock a little power (in some cases) at the expense of terrible-smelling exhaust and senseless pollution.

What a frustrating thing to find after going through so much work to fix it.

I don't think so. I've seen them get fouled up with some material building up on the catalyst, but the only time I've seen or heard of the catalyst being completely gone like that is when somebody intentionally knocks the material out of the cat.

In fact, I had to change every parts of fuel system before to find that!....

If you look at his gas readings, and or if there were o2 sensors and you watched them you'd know immediately if the cats were there or not.
On north america LC and LX you wouldn't get very far with empty cat pipes (nornally). There might be no requirement in his country?.
Which would explain no codes, and even possibly pipes with no catalyst straight from toyota.
Weird though

even if I had suspected that both catalysts were damaged, I had to wait for changing them because they are very expensive parts in Italy. In fact, original Toyota parts cost about 2000 $ each one. So, I began to renovate the fuel system parts cheaper than catalysts. At the end, I did a gas check and the problem was solved!

I don't think this is the case, I know very well the cutting and welding that is done on the catalyst to empty it, but this time as I disassembled it myself and saw with my own eyes, (Fabio is a dear friend of mine) I can ensure that there were no cuts of any kind .....

The times I've seen it done, they just unbolted the section with the cat and shoved a pipe or prybar or something into the cat honeycomb to break it up and just let it fall out. No cutting. 🤷
